Ian could always be counted on to provide first hand accounts and memories of someone who had been there and as such was a valued contributor to this site and all things Halifax. It`s impossible to replace the experiences of those who served. Hopefully forums such as this serve to convey, if only to a few, just how great a sacrifice was made by those who did not return and how so many other thousands of average people willingly volunteered for service, challenged the process of aircrew selection and training and went on to participate in the aerial battles and campaigns of what we all hope will forever be the last of the great world wars.
I hope Ian knew how much his role and others of his like are appreciated in eternity.
I am certain that during my research for my book on the Plzen raid of April 43 (which Mr Duncan took part in) I certainly told him how much we all appreciate all Bomber Command crew and thanked him for his service to us all.
I make a point of begining any conversation or correspondence with these men, that they are told that I greatly appreciate what they did.
I for one take it to heart when one of these great men has gone to meet his maker.
Peter, what a sad loss, thank you for bringing it to the attention of the forum. We are so fortunate to have the company of several veterans on this forum and their views and memories are so much appreciated by us all. They are our national treasures and we should never forget them or what they did for us.
I have been absent from here for a while, and just read about Ian.
It truly is sad to see them go...all I can say is, I hope he's having a grand old time up there with all his buddies, drinking and swapping stories.
God bless you Ian, and thank you for everything you've done for us.
