Hi, just found this thread in the course of my research on Halifax LW638 (MP-W), which was tasked with bombing the Mont Fleury gun batteries on the night before D-day.
Among the crew who were lost, in one of only two Halifaxes to go down out of a total of 946 planes that night, was Sgt. Morris Campbell Murray, RCAF R/175338.
He was a student at my son's high school and they will be visiting his grave at Beny-sur-Mer in March 2009. I am trying to pull together a story about him.
The members of the crew were:
P/O S.A.D. Walker KIA
Sgt N.J. Neal KIA
Sgt M.C. Murray RCAF KIA
F/O I.R. Draper KIA
Sgt D.W.H. Edsall KIA
Sgt P. Craig KIA
Sgt T.A. McRobbie KIA
If anyone can tell me about this mission, or knows anything else about 76 Sqn of the time, I'd love to hear from them. A pointer to
any printed references would be helpful too. I have visited most of the online resources that show up in a search.
thanks
Please could you let me know if you have gathered any further information or found useful web sited. I am currently trying to gather information about this operation to put together a scrap book for my Grandmother. She was married to Sgt Peter Craig.
If you can find a copy then 'To see the dawn breaking' by W.R. Chorley gives a good No. 76 Squadron history. It does mention this loss but with no detail
I have just read your interesting posting requesting information on Sgt Peter Craig and would like you to know have some information on the operation to destroy the enemy coastal defense battery at Mont Fleury (Flower Hill). My father a 76 Squadron navigator was shot down the night before. I have assembled quite a lot about 76 Squadron and also have copies of the Operations Record Book for the period you are interested in. Should you be interested please make contact with me on my email address I will certainly try to help you.
