Halifax III NA702 of ORTU.
Has anybody a record of where this Halifax took off from prior to crashing near Peterborough (Werrington) on 3rd June 1945 after collision with Wellington X LP906 of 81 OTU.
(Also the airfield from which the Wellington took off would be a bonus !)
home base for NA702

i do know that NA702 was with the Operational Refresher Training Unit (according to 'Halifax File') which at the time of the collision was based at Matching (Feb 1945 - Oct 1945) so that is a good starting point !
no information about the Wellington though

The most I have found on 81 OTU bases for the timeframe is either Tillstock or Sleap. Details of the geographical location can be found on the following website.
I also have the crew members of both aircraft.

Many thanks for the pointer ....
I do actually have the full crew lists for both aircraft, ....
It's now got to the point of trying to fill in the missing pieces of the jigsaw ...
Again EVERY LITTLE helps !!!!
.. The actual crash has been miss described in the official report as taking place at Warrington.
.. In fact the crash took place near to Werrington - Peterborough .. which is a good 150 miles off course !!!
The next step would be to try and trace the full crash report !!!
Many thanks !!!

Hi I was researching a distant relative Jim Cunnington Sergeant 1274228 who was RAFVR and also lost his life in this incident. He died Sunday 3 Jun 1945 and was possibly in Transport command engaged in flying in repatriated prisoners back to England. The Accident is mentioned in 'The Price of Peace' - Colin Cummings 'ORTU-Halifax (Operational and Refresher Training Unit) serial NA702 collided with Wellington LP906 and crashed near Werrington, 2 miles north of Peterborough.' I found this info from a RAF Commands Forum.
