RAF Riccall - North Yorkshire

April 24 2014, 2:59 PM

RAF Riccall is in North Yorkshire, North of the town of Selby and South of York on the A19 road.

The first residents were 76 and 78 squadron conversation flights which arrived in September 1942, they were disbanded on 7th October 1942 to become 1658 Heavy Conversation Unit.

No.10 conversion flight arrived from Melbourne,No.102 conversion flight from Pocklington and No.158 conversion flight from Rufforth, all local Yorkshire stations to make up the strength of 1658HCU.

The purpose of the HCU at Riccall was to train crews on the four engine Halifax from mainly the two engine Whitley's and Wellington's.

Two unusual things about Riccall, it only had the one unit based there and H.H.Drummond, arrived from its birth in 1942 as a Flight Commander and finally as OC 1658HCU and deputy Station Commander with the rank of Wing Commander leaving in November 1944.

Most of this information and much more is available in Bruce Barry Halpenny's book ACTION STATIONS - No.4 Military Airfields of Yorkshire, published in 1982.

1658 HCU is just up the road from me... I have visited often and have plenty of photo's as it is now.... Also, the book Aircraft down 3 by Brian Lunn and Lee Arbon is about 1658 HCU and makes good reading.
