If you make a donation to the Canadian Breast Cancer
Foundation, please mention "lacrosse" in a note with
the donation. At my request, in memory of my wife
Brenda, the CBCF will then direct the funds to a
facility seeking a "cure", rather than a "control".

Tuggy Tournament

by Linda Hurren (Login lindalaxxxx)

First off thank You to all that attended the weather was fabulous, the games ran smoothly, the boys got lots of prizes and memento's, learned about the dangers of H.C.M. and we also raised approx.$5000.00 for the Lakeridge Health Oshawa Cardiac Care unit. This year we were faced with some challenges due to Team availability and 3 last minute team cancellations due to emergencies but considering we had 220 Participants last year and 71 this I am proud that we raised this amount with our activities over the weekend. Thanks to all who dug deep to support our cause:).
My thanks goes to Clairngton who were able to form 3 7 on 7 teams and also Oshawa Blue Knights for forming 3 teams. There were also players from Mimico, Peterborough and Oakville. Friday started with the players coming to the field to get registered and receiving their official Tournament Jersey's made by Steve McCarthy MaCarthy Sports they were perfect with the H.C.M. Tuggy Tournament ribbon on the front. As the players arrived so did our first shift of referee's who did an amazing job not one complaint!! They also donated there time completely and covered their own costs for accommodation's!! We awarded the referee's with the Mack Kisbee award for community service we couldn't have done this without them. This was also the first day of our B.B.Q which was completely donated from Rhonda and Family from the Thornton Arms. She also recruited the help of REAL CANADIAN WHOLESALE CLUB,THE FOOD PLUS COMPANY INC and THE GREAT CANADIAN MEAT COMPANY. Thanks to the Thornton arms for covering the cost's of everything down to the ice and water and a special Thank-You to Ben for keeping our BBQ stocked. The mountains of Gatorade were arranged by Pouch we were able to give the boys unlimited fluid on the bench and also 30 bottles of Gatorade to each team.
Saturday started with a fabulous Breakfast donated by 3 wonderful people.
Starbucks organized by Tuggy's cousin Jenna, supplied coffee (Consumers/Thickson) and cookies (Brock/Taunton) for everyone, even official Starbucks servers(thanks coffee crew) to get us all going Saturday and Sunday.
The hot cakes were donated by Scott Gibson from McDonald's the kids absolutely loved them and they sent so many we were able to use them Sunday morning as well, Scott also arranged for the delivery of Banana's apples and peaches. Defiantly no dehydration at this event:). To compliment our breakfast Johnny's Original eatery donated bacon, sausage's and the use of his amazing 7 foot BBQ!! After the breakfast the lacrosse games started and so did the prize tables. I had so many donators I apologize in advance if I miss anyone you were all appreciated. The prize tables were amazing Thank You to Grosnor
sports, pack signs, A.J. Shannon, Gee Nash, Voo-Doo Airbrushing,Young Drivers of Canada, Aquamassage,Canadian Tire, The Keg, Platinum Fitness,
Jenna Starbucks Coffee, Joel Johnson, Barry Johnson, Gatorade, Celestica, Sonya Shanks, Sheila Passfield, Steve McCarthy Sports Warrior I'm sure I am missing some Sorry if it's you:)
We had various cameo visits from different players from the NLL, Senior lacrosse and junior Thanks for coming out and supporting us during the weekend.
Sunday the final day of the tournament brought out the hardware and the final games. Made by pack signs was a huge banner for all the visitors and Participants to sign. Speaking of Pack signs they are amazing people if you need something done right they are the ones!! They made sure to include every person that donated big or small!! They also made beautiful Banners to hang Thanking our major Sponsors. Every sign you seen at the field was a pack Sign
and was completely donated. On top of the banner sat the main Trophies donated by Lundy's Plumbing and Medals for every player donated by Chris. Heickert of HIghmark Homes.
For those of you wondering if I was able to be in 10 places at once the answer is a definite no! None of this would have been possible without the support and help from the following people to name a few, many people also came out to help through out the weekend but I don't have my list so to avoid missing some I will just name the main leaders, Joel Johnson for organizing the ref's fields and team info, Sonya Shanks for handling the game weekend functions and keeping all the fields running smoothly, Terry Loyd and Rick Phillips our Ola rep's, Kelly Perry for organizing all our wonderful volunteers, Sheila's Family and friends for taking control of the BBQ functions and making sure everyone was fed, my crew of Guy's/boy's you all know who you are( we had set up and tear down done in record time), the foundation at the hospital for believing in us and helping get the word out, Marla Lundy for organizing the All Star game selections and awards. Speaking of the Warrior All Star Game, I again mention Steve McCarthy McCarthy Sports/Warrior he is an amazing supporter of our tournament for the second year in a row he donated 32 AllStar uniforms for the boys to keep as a souvenir.
In closing I hope everyone had a fun weekend ,Thank-You Sheila for allowing this tournament. Please always keep Tuggy's memory alive in your heart and spread the dangers of H.C.M.. I'm sure Rick is watching from above and wishing he could be with us as much as we would love to be with him.
***A special message to the family of Mark Vandemeer**
