And the consesus by the referees who attended was that there's no such thing as a random stick check, and he's correct.
As a ref, you are watching the game and you are just as capable as anyone of seeing whether a stick is illegal or not. Say they notice that a certain player is using an illegal stick, and that player also happens to be giving them issues all game long (or the coach for that team has been). Whose stick do you think will get "randomly" selected?
Leave it in the hands of the coach, but add a penalty for it being wrong (which IIRC isn't in place in field).
And on the flip side, don't use an illegal stick, that saves everyone the hassle.
