Re: OHL CUP GROUPS/PREDICTIONS

March 19 2007, 5:13 PM

This tournament will be very unpredictable since the teams will all come in under different conditions. Some (like the GTHL finalists) will be very beat-up (but also will be game ready). Some will have had lay-offs that are too long and might find it difficult to get their legs. I wouldn't be surprised to see alot of upsets. But anyway, the purpose of this tournament is for the OHL scouts to have a final look at the majority of the top talent available for the draft. I don't place alot of importance in this as far deciding who the best minor midget team is.

It's definitely too bad some of the Detroit teams aren't coming. Would make for a much better hockey tournament. It will still be a good one to watch but could have been even better.

Re: OHL CUP GROUPS/PREDICTIONS

March 20 2007, 12:01 PM

My comment was not about wanting them or needing them. I was merely pointing out that it would be an even more competitive tournament with Belle Tire, Honeybaked and Little Caesars involved. Seems to me that whenever the ratings came out this year on the OHL website two of them were always ranked in the top ten. Now they are not going to show? That's not exactly great marketing. That's called setting yourself up for disappointment. Did the OHL not know they would be in the middle of playoffs and turn the invitations down? Like I said, it will still be a great tournament to watch but it could have been even more so.

I think most on the Michigan teams will go for scholarships...NCAA...not OHL. so maybe this is why they do not enter.

A profesional coach (they are paid a lot).. from Honeybaked said that the best option for US players is NCAA over the OHL.

Re: OHL CUP GROUPS/PREDICTIONS

March 20 2007, 1:34 PM

I agree. In fact, I think the OHL Cup should be an All Canadian event. I realize the American Teams compete in our tournaments during the year and that the players are also eligible for the OHL draft. However, they seem to have their own thing going south of the border which is a higher priority than what the OHL Cup is. So, be up front, and omit the U.S. teams from this event and fill the rankings with Canadian content. Their teams tend to be State teams anyway and the Border City Cup is the proper venue.

American Teams

March 20 2007, 2:58 PM

In regards to the Americans Teams. I do think they are superior to our teams and would give the tournament, some games to watch.

Unlike us, they PRODUCE 3 solid lines. They practice and warm up as hard as they play. Their coaches are paid to produce, and develop, and win. And it shows.

We put coaches with sons on the bench, that don't belong there, and produce nothing and develop nothing. It shows. How embarassing.

Ice Dogs are about the only team that can compete with Honeybaked, Belle Tire and Ceasars. This has gone on for years, and we have learned ABSOLUTELY nothing from it or them.

They put our teams to shame. I thought it was OUR game.

The American teams have their own thing happening. They promote USHL, NCAA(education first) and so on. Why in the hell would they want to play in the "O"? Who will screw your kid in an intant and in a blink of an eye, with absolutely no remorse or morals. If you think differently, think again.

They only come up here to get us talking about them, put us to shame with their game, and take spots on our lists.

I am pretty sure our Ontario teams have NEVER made it to one of their lists!

All about control and making us look bad, and they are succeeding quite easily, I might add.

Right on and vise versa for the Prospects Tourny coming up. should really only be for US players..OHL scouts not even there...unless you Cannuck players want to pay high fees for something that is really unattainable (NCAA full ride))..only NCAA scouts are there.

Re: OHL CUP GROUPS/PREDICTIONS

March 20 2007, 3:05 PM

Exactly,

Bob Turows Prospects Tourney is the USHL. It should be for American kids.

No canadian kid is going to get a FULL scholarship ride over an American kid. Americans think school 100%. Ontario thinks the "O", bad idea.

OHL CANNOT scout prospects. Go to prospects with the intentions of having FUN. You know the fun your coaching staff took away from you this draft year. To promote their own.

P.S I am not American, "I AM CANADIAN"

but think my kid would of developed better if he was coached by the top three american teams. You know the ones that have NO kids on the ice. You know the ones that get PAID.

You don't like what you see, you get fired.

right on again.. and the age old truth even in coaching "You get what you pay for"

however, there are some really dedicated guys (coaches) out there non-paid in Canada.

Since this is a showcase tournament it would be interesting if they compiled a team of all the best player from the teams that didn't make it. Like a 91 all-star team of players not on teams in the ohl cup, i think this would make the tournament intersting a give a chance for kids who were unable to make the tournament due to there team.

Burlington edged out North York Rangers for the spot. A complete joke. But the NYR coaches blew it by not getting the scouts on side and controlling their players thru the season. The reputation of the NYR coaches is not held in high esteem at Central Scouting and more specifically Rob Kitumura.

"how in hell did burlington make it in!?"
"A complete joke"

Both you guys should look at some tournament results before you judge a team you know nothing about. Burlington has a very impressive tournament record this season, 18-4. They have defeated some very strong teams including:
Brampton (2), Niagara Falls, Mississauga Rebels, Nepean, Ottawa Valley, Hamilton Bulldogs, Sun County, Peterborough (2). They were in the finals the Tim Horton's losing 2-1 to Waterloo and the finals in Belleville losing 5-3 to Kingston. They also lost a very tight game, 5-4, to Cambridge in the Waterloo Gold Puck. All these games could've gone either way. They were 3-1 at the Marlies tournament losing a tight game to Thunder Bay. If I look at the OHL Priority Draft List, I see they also have 7 players listed. Not bad for a team that 'shouldn't be at the OHL Cup'.

What did North York do that is anywhere near as impressive? Where did they finish in their league and how did they fair in the playoffs / Tournaments?

I realize the OHL Cup is a GTHL sponsored tournament. The GTHL is represented by their best teams: Icedogs, Marlies, Nats, Rebels, Jr. Cdns,. Let's face it, the quality of the teams in ANY league drops off significantly after the top four.

The way I see it, the Eagles earned their ticket to the OHL Cup.

Nicely Done. Instead of throwing in a team that REALLY doesn't belong there.

To the Burlington parent at 141.119 North York finished 2 points out of 4th place(12 team league). Defeated in tournament play Whitby 5-2, Waterloo 4-0, lost 5-4 to Niagara missing 5 starters from the lineup, beatup on Central Ontario 7-0 and defeated a number of other good teams. Went to two semi's and 3-1 in the Border City Cup losing only to Honeybaked. Also beat and tied the Ice Dogs thru the year. The only reason your team is in and NYR is out is the perception by scouts of the NYR coaching staff and dressing room.
