| Lets try a simple process and list all the kids who's fathers were a Coach,GM,Executive, Trainer, or anyone on the bench. Were there multiple picks from one team with vested interests? List the team then the players and who their dad was. See if there is a trend. |

Last pick of the draft by the London Knights was to the son of the chairman of th board who runs the Labatt's Centre and Philadelphia Spectrum.
Owen Sound's last pick has the same last name as the coach. Strothers.
Sarnia's last pic has the same last name as the coach. MacQueen. |

Even better, try to see of the kids drafted, how many of their minor midget coaches, trainers, assistant coaches managers etc. were parents. That would be a good indicator of any self promotion. |

I see two sides to this coin.
One side the parents that are coaching at that level are parents who have played alot of hockey and with that have passed alot of information both on the ice and at home.
2nd side I was standing in an arena lobby when the Midget coach was going to AP a player from Bantam
he said out loud not a concern about who hears I want this player #who cares but we have to take the coaches son as well that common curtacie. Why pick the coaches son and give him the oportunity if he does not deserve it.
Never the less the coaches kids may get more opportunities and this may be the deciding factor of faster improvement.
Flim A Coin, what side are you on???? |

You think that cronyism or nepotism doesn't exist outside of hockey? Why would you think that hockey would be different? It's part of life, just like everyhting else.
If you owned a business, would anyone question you giving a part time job to a friend's kid? Your son? Your nephew?

North York Rangers- Campbell head coach-son drafted in 6th round
Trescham assnt coach-son drafted in 4th round
Both players are draftable-Trescham about right but Campbell in the 6th? Thought 9th-13th would be right. Notice how both were drafted to same team-Guelph. Must have been a package deal. |

We seem to be talking about two different things here.
"One side the parents that are coaching at that level are parents who have played alot of hockey and with that have passed alot of information both on the ice and at home."
95% of these parents never coached a day in their life until their own kid started playing sports & will not coach another day as soon as their kids are done. They are not real coaches, they are parents that MUST control their kids life & that's easiest accomplished from the bench. With some of them their hockey background is more based on their dreams than reality.
They are more than happy to protect the interests of their own kids at the expense of whomever. Afterall they can to a certain degree influence some of the personal final outcomes.
The other side might be for instance an OHL club drafting a scout or coaches kid. Part of it may be rewarding good service. Another part of it are the "intangibles" that may influence drafting kids. Sure Jimmy may be better than Bobby, but they know Bobby & his parents, his genetics & his work ethics, etc. Meanwhile Jimmy's old man may have a history of being a pain in the butt. I know who I would pick.

Here's another one Marcus Foligno - Pops took his boy second round in Sudbury.
Very few kids get drafted on talent alone. It's all about how much promotion the coach, agent or family member dishes out. If you honestly think any of your kids get drafted on talent alone, you're sadly mistaken and have wasted ALOT of money in hockey.
Just add up all the money you spend in the past 10 years of hockey. That amount alone would have sent your kids to university.... twice. |

As far as most of these posts go, all of them apparently. If you got drafted it had nothing to do with being talented or deserving or showing up every game. It was all about paying off people, connections, father coaches, squeeky wheels, suck-ups etc. I guess all the kids that got drafted are richer then all the kids that didn't. But it's pretty clear by the experts here, that if you didn't get drafted you should gave been cause you are all superstars and then ones that did get drafted should be playing houseleague. Is that just about right?? Right! |

Kingston / SSM / Oshawa ...
no coincidence that they all had poor drafts. |

Kingston drafted Greg Whittle in the 9th round - the steal of the draft so I disagree with the above post about Kingston having a poor draft. Whittle should have gone 3rd or th 4th round. |
