TIPPING IS PLAIN STUPID!
BOTTOM LINE:
So why do we allow this scam, in the form/system of "tipping," to go on by our participation in this practice?
Easy! Mainly because of the massive social pressure on us to do so.
Also, there is the vanity aspect--we ourselves, love to tip-- "put on the dog," as they say --by impressing ourselves and others in our demonstarted generosity and ability to reward, handsomely, those "underlings" --yes, perceived underlings, if you care to be honest with yourself about it--even though said underlings may easily be pocketing higher wages than you yourself and for less effort.
And, their employers are laughing at all of us while they are quite content with their lower operating costs, as they, and the IRS, manipulate the whole scene to their personal advantage.
What If....
All costs of going out for meals, etc.--both goods and services--were included in the cost as listed--just like most other things. No tips, surcharges, gratuities, no BS!, whatever... WHAT A CONCEPT!!!
Now that I have adopted Australia as my new home, I do have to say that the one thing that I don't miss about America is tipping. Here, I can enjoy a meal at a restaurant and not be required to assess the level of service I received in order to calculate the commensurate tip. Because GST is included in the menu prices, it's even easier to pay the bill. A $19.95 dinner costs $19.95, not $19.95 plus 7-10% sales tax plus 15-20% tip. The service here is a bit slower and less personalised, but it's much appropriate, because I am not interested in making friends with the service staff. I just want to eat my meal with my mates and then move on. Having a waiter interrupt my meal every 2-3 minutes asking me "how is everything?" is the most annoying habit of restaurant service in America. In Australia, the waiter takes the order, brings the meal, checks on things when you're done eating, and then brings you the cheque ONLY after asking for it. It's a much more enjoyable eating experience here.
When I was here on holiday, I actually had a bellhop deliver my bag to the room. Before I could even think about the tip issue, he was gone. In America, the bellhop would wait with his hand extended for his tip. It is so disgraceful. Tipping is the epitomy of everything that is wrong with America.

Dude, that awesome. You say it so well. I've been to australia and I didnt find this problem either. Many countries have banned tipping. It is demeaning and stressful. Instead of having a quiet meal where the waiter acts like a waiter, you end up with a in-your-face *******. Bloody stupid. And one always calculates the tip wondering whether it will satisfy the waiter or not. I've been guilty of that. Its juvenile.
