TIPPING IS PLAIN STUPID!
BOTTOM LINE:

So why do we allow this scam, in the form/system of "tipping," to go on by our participation in this practice? Easy! Mainly because of the massive social pressure on us to do so.

Also, there is the vanity aspect--we ourselves, love to tip-- "put on the dog," as they say --by impressing ourselves and others in our demonstarted generosity and ability to reward, handsomely, those "underlings" --yes, perceived underlings, if you care to be honest with yourself about it--even though said underlings may easily be pocketing higher wages than you yourself and for less effort.

And, their employers are laughing at all of us while they are quite content with their lower operating costs, as they, and the IRS, manipulate the whole scene to their personal advantage.

What If.... All costs of going out for meals, etc.--both goods and services--were included in the cost as listed--just like most other things. No tips, surcharges, gratuities, no BS!, whatever...
WHAT A CONCEPT!!!

WAKE UP AMERICA!

Gunny,
Went in, in 64, to 1st Recon in Apr 67, got out in May of 68. In principle I agree with most everything you have stated with a couple exceptions. To Insure Promptness came about in late 1800's for the exact reason you stated. Can't find it earlier-anywhere. I HATE "you guys" stuff and will tell server same. Don't kneel down, don't put your hand on my shoulder and DON'T call me GUYS, arrrrrggggghhhh! I disagree with you on tipping though. Pay your dues and you can refer to me as "You guys". Being 60 they have no idea what paying your dues means anyway.
I tip and I'll tell you why. Not to impress anyone, not for control issues but to get what I want. Most of the time up front, I'll tip. It gets their attention, I'm called sir or Mr.....
and most definitely go to the front of the line. (kind of a scilian thing, I guess) Anyway, not that I am anybody special, I get special treatment when I hand a few bucks up front. Depending on where, time of day etc. I make a point of doing it very discreetly though for the exact reasons you stated above. Not for perceived underlings, not for the love of tipping and not for putting on the dog. The only thing these kids in todays generation understand is MONEY$$$$$
When one is normally not tipped and you hand them a few bucks watch how they change their attitude.
Good luck on your site.....
