TIPPING IS PLAIN STUPID!
BOTTOM LINE:
So why do we allow this scam, in the form/system of "tipping," to go on by our participation in this practice?
Easy! Mainly because of the massive social pressure on us to do so.
Also, there is the vanity aspect--we ourselves, love to tip-- "put on the dog," as they say --by impressing ourselves and others in our demonstarted generosity and ability to reward, handsomely, those "underlings" --yes, perceived underlings, if you care to be honest with yourself about it--even though said underlings may easily be pocketing higher wages than you yourself and for less effort.
And, their employers are laughing at all of us while they are quite content with their lower operating costs, as they, and the IRS, manipulate the whole scene to their personal advantage.
What If....
All costs of going out for meals, etc.--both goods and services--were included in the cost as listed--just like most other things. No tips, surcharges, gratuities, no BS!, whatever... WHAT A CONCEPT!!!
First let me say, if you wish to argue in this format, being able to speak english at least reasonably well helps greatly. If basic grammar is really that hard, you should be focusing on issues other than tipping.
Now, as to the statement disregarding the idea that servers make less than minimum wage, it's absolutely true, the IRS -- the institution that you say ALL servers run rampant over -- allows the employer to determine what level of income thier server will receive in tips, and base thier income on that. This has settled, pretty much across the board, into a standard rate for servers of $2.13 an hour. Servers who have been somewhere for awhile may make more, but it is more than likely less than $2.75 an hour.
Also, the IRS requires that as a server you report at least 8 percent of your overall sales as tips.
I have watched the IRS audit individual servers over tips, the argument that the IRS goes after the restaurant for that lapse in income is ridiculous, at least on the corporate front. Can you really imagine a company like Darden Group paying the taxes thier employees neglected to pay?(this is the company that owns Olive Garden, Red Lobster, and a few other smaller chains.) That's alot of extra money they must be shelling out to the IRS to keep their dishonest employees on the roll. MOST servers (I agree not all) are reasonably honest about thier tip income. The line pretty much across the industry is that if you report 10-12 percent of your sales as tips, you are safe from being audited personally. Does that extra 3-5 percent really bother you that much? For that matter would you really rather they report it all and have the IRS take more of your/their money?
Thats all I feel like contributing right now, but I'll probably be back.
The funny thing about me responding to this is I'm a Chef, not a server -- I hate servers.
