What happens to us after HCL

Since I was diagnosed and treated 18 months ago I was wondering what some of the other HCLrs have been diagnosed with since treatment?

I guess on average we'll go 7 years before needing to be retreated and we are more likely to be susceptible to other cancers. Which are those?

Thanks.

Don't know stats only logic...

...if the immune system is down HCLrs would be susceptible
to many things as they age. As for cancers--I suspect the
risk is only slightly higher. I just had to deal with squamus
cell carcinoma on my hand, but that's sun damage and I'm
now 61. So...is it a lowered immune system--mine's not currently
below normal? Or, is it sun damage... and could it be due to my
aging, where otherwise, I'd fend off the damage much better if
my skin was younger? Many folks without any sort of cancer get
skin cancer ... so how do you actually factor this into a coherent
equation that would predict something--and how would this relate
to you personally if you did form a statistical outcome?

What Happens Next

Hi Ken,

I was diagnosed back in 1992 when i was 28 have relapsed twice, had last round of treatment last November and i am currently in 'a good partial remission'.
Apart from the HCL in all this time i have had nothing wrong with me and do not even suffer from the flu or bad colds. Perhaps this is just me and i am lucky- i am not sure and try not to dwell on what could be. I like to keep fairly fit, do not smoke or drink too much and try to eat healthily although i do not have a hangup with any of these and enjoy a fry up occasionally.
The worst things i have had are my motorcross injuries and i do not think you can count these in this instance!!

Hope this helps,
All the very best,
Dave.

Post HCL

Thank you for the insight. There are so many times when people are asking me how I feel that it takes a second for the light to go on that I had HCL. I compare it to catching a bad flu, you are down and out for a while but bouncing back has it's rewards.

Dave, I am a motocrosser too. At least those injuries are self induced and I can look back and say "gee maybe I shouldn't have done that" Unlike HCL.

Ken

You can head off some trouble by......

July 7 2009, 4:27 PM

Eating right, exercising, sleeping, de-stressing, etc....

All of the above are not entirely easy or even achievable in a "typical" life with work, kids etc....

But, we can try to help ourselves as best as possible.

I suggest you look at reading two books:

1) Anticancer

2) Beating Cancer with Nutrition.

These were suggested here a while back, and I found them pretty good....especially Anticancer.
