on the post page, above , see "Quote"? (it works not with wysiwyg-editor).
A thingy Mr. Pip has on his scripts page:
http://mrpip.orcon.net.nz/nw54/msgformat.html
My guestbook (Gaestebuch) (upper right corner on my navi-menu, second item)
http://www.onlinewebservice6.de/gastbuch.php?id=54525
about BB-boards.. they are great... somehow. For example: the coming forum at Sebastian's would be a BB-board, and we then will have different cathegories. Which is very useful for this kind of use.
But if you need just a place where people just chat and talk, you woudn't find any better than Network54. Away from this, I like the abillity to change style, language, look in our different N54 boards, this is a thing which cannot be done with a BB board.

You have in your CGI center (or was it CGI-scripts? not sur) at HostingInsiders a SSI thingy.. umm.. Server-Side-Include.
I've used similiar to insert the right and left Navigations on my homepage.
How? i have a simple html-page with nothing but the navi links on it (here the left menu :
http://rattarium.net/Rattarium/rattenspielplatz.html ) and on the index-pagge I've written:
Code:
| <!--#include virtual="rattenspielplatz.html" --> |
at the place where I want to have them appear. This was new to me, too. But it seems to work.

Counters you say. Avoid Bravenet. Once there were really good.. now they are overloaded with (bad) ads.
oh yes.. the W3 checker.. you are really scared by the first time using it, but the - as you said - you learn a lot about writing correct code.

the advantage is clear: if you scripted correct, the site can be seen by many (more) people.

You should follow your own advice (Keep it simple) The best to "feed" your visitors with small morsel. readable text (not dark text on dark background or so) smaller tables with text, so the writing isn't spread out over the whole screen. etc...
Don't slap me when I say: you dont have to use tables there.. for design it is enough to have just the DIV's and their BORDERS - easy to set with CSS-styles, you may learn more about it :

(not the best page, alas my favorites are all in German, not really useful for you

) they may be more out there, try Google or so to find them.
some more css tuts:

Put off your font tags or other design stuf.. just make pure html, and 'make' your page- design via css. If you have to change anything later, you just have to change ONE file. amazing
ok.. bye for now.. have to feed the family.. they are problably lost without someone(me) cooking and serving ...
