Critics Go Crazy For Johnny Mar 11 2004
Following his Oscar-nominated performance in The Pirates of The Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl, Johnny Depp is getting rave reviews for his new film, Secret Window, about to open in the States.
It's based on the Stephen King novella, Secret Window, about a writer who isolates himself in a remote lakeside cabin after he discovers his wife - played by Maria Bello - has been unfaithful.
Depp says he chose the role because he loves thrillers, particularly by Stephen King and was intrigued by the character of Mort Rainey, who's desperate and depressed.
"There is something passive-aggressive about him that I like very much, a quiet subdued sort of guy, probably a guy who's too smart for his own good, cynical not trustful of others.
"And I liked the reclusive quality of this guy, who probably didn't look in the mirror very much ever - he never realized he had the bedhead all the time."
Depp says he's also focusing on writing in his own life. "I've always admired writers, anyone who could bring their thoughts and emotions out onto a page and to able to allow the masses, the people to read it and be OK with that."
But he says he won't be changing careers anytime soon. "I've always written but it's been pretty much for myself."
