Her Story
She sits in the shadows
Reading her book
Making notes of feelings
With a far-away look
A song on the radio
Touches her soul
Long-hidden emotions
Give her a new goal
Find new words to express
The inner turmoil
Childhood nightmares repressed
Buried under consecrated soil
Her little girl memories
And tormented heart
Emotional trauma recalled
A mind torn apart
By Dissociative Disorder
A personality split
Four fragmented copies
Puzzle pieces that don't fit
The adult she is now often
Breaks into tears
As words depict old hurts
She relieves chronic fears
Determined to tell her story
She's not quite sure how
Is anyone really interested?
Can she help someone now?
Hours of intense therapy in
The five years it took
To integrate the little ones
She could write her own book!
Instead she pours her heart out
Hours at a time
Describing profound images
Making sure the stanzas rhyme
She tells about the loneliness,
The suffering, the shame,
A battered and bruised self-image
It's all part of the game
That the mind has to play
Just to daily survive
Can you ever understand
The price she paid to stay alive?
"Don't give in to impulses to
Toss it all away!
Death's NOT your salvation
You must find another way!
Your true path WILL be shown
When you least expect!
All questions WILL be answered
You ARE deserving of respect!"
Her whole life she's been bombarded
With this spiritual refrain
Believing that it's Heaven sent
Kept her from going insane
Now exhausted by the effort of
Trying to "get it right"
She gives in to the moment
And retires for the night
Pam
