my brother..

I saw my brother just today;
he looked at me with bitter eyes
that seemed so much to want to say
words of disgust more than surprise.
I saw someone whom I betrayed,
the most trusted of my allies.
How did we meet such disarray?
How did our contract meet demise?
I saw a face, to my dismay,
frustrated, bearing no disguise
and all that I can do is pray
that our relations will reprise.
I saw a friend who got away,
be it because of truth or lies?
It’s really not for me to say
the reason there were no goodbyes.

I met my brother yesterday...
the first time in so many years.
He welcomed me to come and stay
with words so wise and so sincere.

He seemed so different than before
and yet just as he's always been...
We spoke of new and ancient lore
and of the many tribes of men.

But then the conversation changed
to something grave and sadly dire--
of all the chances we're arranged
and all our friends who have expired.

So surely, now, I plainly see
my brother feels a likened way
to that which, too, bewilders me--
the fact that we're alive today.

With all the stupid $#!% I've done
it makes me wonder what is planned...
might I be destined for the gun
to send me to the Promised Land?

See, I have had such careful friends
who measured every step they took
and yet it did not keep the end
from coming to their solemn books.

I can not really speculate
on why it is I still am here
with all the times I've tempted Fate
and looked to Death with careless sneers.

And now I face a risky trail
though I have seen so many lose
their lives on journeys that would pale
compared to what I have to choose.

So now I see and now I know
that danger's not a matter here
and neither's skill nor where you go
or whether all your friends are near.

There is but one great fact of Death
and it's as simple as it's true.
You close your eyes.. you hold your breath
but some day it will come for you.

Awesome, Jim!

I'm just sitting here shaking my head, in awe of your talent. You are truly connected to the Source, my young friend, and if all this negative stuff about your life is true, then you've probably been exposed to bad things for good purpose. Usually, in my own life, if I'm exposed to less than savory situations, it's because I can do some good there, or for those people. I have the feeling the same thing applies in your life, Jim.

I'm still shaking my head over this poem, because it's brilliant. In the beginning there were a few places that could have been a little awkward, turns of phrase one doesn't ordinarily hear, but overall the poem works so well it's breathtaking. Thank you very much.

I'm often awestruck by the quality of the work that is posted here on this tiny little corner in cyber space, and one of these days I'll surprise you all by showing you some of your work set in beautiful pages. I'm getting close to the end of this biography I've been working on, and do apologize to you all for being so busy I haven't had time to work any further with all of our work. I'm getting closer, though, and soon it will be done.

Love and Blessings,

Alice
