Casualty of War

The war, it was now over
And the dreams were all dead
My victory felt hollow
All the wounds were in my head

No longer need I answer
To all of their demands
Through strength of will and anger
My life's back in my own hands

The battle scars are many
My soul has paid the price
For every loss and win
Hope vanquished not once but twice

Outwardly I'm a trooper
Who's so competent and wise
But hiding on the inside is
Another "me" wearing a disguise

She's oh so lost and weary
Struggle started long ago
How to begin a new life
When sacrifice is all I know?

To others I look normal
They do not see my pain
Puzzled by my reactions
"You have no cause to complain!"

That's why I envy veterans
With physical injuries
They have no need to justify
Coping with emotional disease

Recovery time is expected
There's help at every turn
Unlike the unsung hero
Who's just left to crash and burn

No parades or ribbons exist
To honour what I've endured
The false "me" everyone saw
Has been killed instead of cured

Now all that is remaining
Is the little "me" that's hid
She must pick up the pieces
Though "middle aged" she feels a kid

Again she faces danger
And dread at every turn
These fiends are quite personal
As she is quick to learn

A new war's now before me
Make these demons disappear
When at last I'm triumphant
No more struggle! No more fear!

Very good, Pam!

Pam, you have such an excellent way of touching upon and sharing deeply emotional pain and recovery. We really do need to get some of your work published, it would be an inspiration to a lot of people, not only adoptees.

Very good work once again, Pam!

Love and Big Hugs,

Pam
