So Close to Heaven


I have never been so close to Heaven
A fleeting moment.
At the airport I knew you, you knew me.
We’d never met.
Yet.
I carried my bags
We walked together,
Mixed auras linking.

We taxied to my hotel.
We dined.
Talk was rare.
Looks and smiles frequent.
Finger touches
Across the table.
At the end we drank port – inevitable.
We didn’t kiss.
Parted with a slight embrace.

I have never been so close to Heaven.
She met me for breakfast.
Juice and muesli …………..
For her.
English trad for me.
We know we share so much
But not taste in breakfast.
She looked so alive,
No make-up, just her, so real
We snacked, laughed and slurped.

I met her children
And her children and her children.
Yep
She was the mother of mothers.
Yet the welcome was warm.
I was a piece of the jigsaw,
Maybe not the final piece –
But in this household – who cares.
And we stood amidst a veggie field,
Arms and waists and heads connected.

I have never been so close to Heaven.
She showed me her computer.
We sat on her bed.
My thoughts were elsewhere
As she talked me through her various sites.
I was eyeing her movements.
Studying the profile.
Smelling, probably, false signals.
But I didn’t care.
She was fraught with a welcome.
She was gorgeous.

We talked the night through
Or mostly I listened
To her voice, watched her lips, breathed her sighs.
I was indeed rampant
When she announced
It was time for me to go. So ….
In the hotel room
I wrote her a letter
Apologising for my animalistic thoughts ……..
Not behaviour, please understand.

I have never been so close to Heaven.
I was walking to the check out …….
And she was there
And she said that I belonged.
Not to her,
Or her kidlets, (some of which were quite overgrown).
But to her life.
Then she kissed me ……….
And I mean a kiss with all the extras.
I have never been so close to Heaven.
The plane took off.
And so did we.
Back to my hotel.
