I wrote this late last night, after hearing yesterday morning that Billy Walker, his wife Betty, and two of their band members were killed in a car accident. A fifth person, Joshua Brooks, was injured and is hopefully recovering in hospital.
These words started to come to me, and I had to write them down.
God Must Love Country Music
God must love Country Music
He called old Billy home
Took along his wife with him
So Billy's not alone
Billy Walker had a life
Lived on the Opry stage
And now he'll sing in Heaven
'Cause God has turned the page
It seems like such a tragedy
To us left grieving here
But Billy and his Betty
Won't be shedding any tears
God must love Country Music
He called old Billy home
Took along his wife with him
So Billy's not alone
They'll put on such a show up there
Meet up with their old friends
See Roy and Elvis, Hawkshaw, Patsy
Finally make amends
Wish I could hear Charlie's Shoes
Sung in the Great Beyond
But we get to keep his music here
Even though old Billy's gone
God must love Country Music
He called old Billy home
Took along his wife with him
So Billy's not alone
I am nearly immune to impersonal tragedy - so many earthquakes, tsunamis and wars. But even when I pass the aftermath of a road accident I always touch my collar and say a few words.
This time my silent words go to the loved ones, grieving ones, family and fans that are left behind.
