Long Marriage
Married forty years, laughter, tears, all that stuff.
Oooops! Forgot heartache and heartbreak!
How about knowing each other?
Or, (more scary), not knowing each other?
Two hearts bonded/welded together,
Yet these hearts have never and never will, synchronize.
Some words are never to be spoken and if they are,
Silence sleeps and awakes. For both to see, it sits behind the eyes.
Without kids, they are alone, friends and family are ill or dying.
With kids. Well they’ve discarded you, left home physically or spiritually.
Two unsynchronized hearts crying, searching, sighing.
Spoken words – and stillness. Threatening silence!
Today I saw, I’ve been, this happened – Pass the remote.
You’re not listening!! Have we watched this?
He or she weeps silently. They holiday together,
Shop together, live together, occasionally hold hips and kiss.
Eventually one dies. Grief? Relief?
Fried potatoes from the night before –
The bin is a sin. Better fried again.
Ok, there is more significant stuff!
But this is the pan he/she would have washed.
And thrown away the potatoes.
I sit down to fried potatoes with eggs and ham
And cry.
I never knew you
And yet now I’m lost.
