"Checkpoint 4: Wednesday, March 03rd, 2004. Have read and finish chapters 13-16 (13: Deathwatch {81-89}, 14: The Maddness of Life {90-91}, 15: A Rider's Blade {92-106}, & 16: Saddlemaking {107-110})."
That is what it says on my post for the book in general. Well, 2 days off. No matter.
So, we definatly learned some new info on the back story. (Well I'm going off memory, I'm quite a bit ahead of this myself so I could be thinking ahead of myself...) Wel learned of the Ra'zac, well some stuff about them. But I will say even at the point I'm at I really would like to learn even more about them. And the blade that Brom gave Eragon, did he tell hom the name yet? I can't remember if he learned the name of it, but he definatly got the back story of where the blades come from when he was handed it. What do you all think so far?
And I saw a death coming. I wasn't sure it would be Garrow's though. I thought more likely it would be Roran's. I figured it would be more if a surprise thing, like Garrow would heal and Roran died. But I knew someone in the trio would die because of that speach Garrow gave. It struck me as one of those speaches you give when you truly know you will never see someone again. And the way he just let Roran go after how Eragon thought Garrow would react to the news about being a Miller, it was like he knew what was coming and wanted him away from the danger. Did anyone else get that feeling that something drastic was going to happen?
gawd...man this book is getting predictable...i should post theories in each section. Im enjoying it, but yes, i could sence something was up...duh. And he leaves Garrow alone, thats not forshadowing...In order to set out on his quest, he must have nothing left in carvahall, so of course, garrow dies...feeling starwarsish already
Hehe...it is getting good tho, its moving. Brom is intruiging, i bet he was a rider once. That is why he can talk to saphira.

Well I'm at a point in the story where I could answer your theory about the rider. But I won't spoil it for you. I will say that he will explain that anybody, with the right training in magic and stuff, can learn to speak with any form of animles (including dragons).
I actually had MadEye, Amanda, and Sandy in a chat room last night. They basicaly came up with the idea that this book is like any other fantasy novel and is prety pradictable. Personaly the Garrow thing was the only thing I found pradictable. But then again the only things I've ever read that you could consider fantasy was this book, 'Eragon', the Anne Rice vampire books, Anne's book on 'The Mummy', & lastely the Harry Potter series. And they are all different from each other in their own way. So I can't say things like it's anything like any other book because I ahvn't really read anything else. Maybe that's why I like it so much, more surprising since I'm not really used to the fantasy ganra (sp?). But reguardless, I do think this book is amazing and it really will start to get moving quickly in the next few chapters. :D
I'm at page... *Reaches for book to pull out his Legolas and Gimli book mark to check* ...I'm at page 393. And I intend to read a bit more a little later after I make my board rounds. How far are you Locke? You asked and then didn't answer your own question lol.
Oh, actually, that is a good idea what you said earlier in the thread. Making predictions is always fun so you can see if you were right. But saddely enough I'm way to far ahead to make a prediction. It would involve way more characters then any of you have gotten to yet.
Ok, I had to go check to see where this checkpoint leaves off. Saddlemaking. Oh, that must be where they make the saddle for Saphira lol Yep, I'm a bright one.
So, Garrow is dead. Brom and Eragon have taken off into hiding with Saphira. Brom has given Eragon a Rider's sword (though we don't know how Brom got it), and Brom has shown Eragon how to make a dragon saddle.
It seems that Brom knows a lot of stuff about Riders and stuff that Riders know. I'm really interested to know how Brom knows all this information (nope, I really don't know yet).
Garrow had to die after the encounter at the house, or else Eragon would feel obligated to stay and take care of him. So, even though they said it looked like Garrow was getting better, you just knew that Garrow was going to die. And, yes, I agree about the whole speech thing. You knew something was going to happen.
What I didn't understand was when Eragon was worried that he had forgotten something. And then he was like, Oh, yeah, Roran. That was just weird.

Well, I just finished the book. I counted, if we go by four chapters per checkpoint like we have been doing, then their will be 16 checkpoints. ***Realizes the rest of you are on Checkpoint 4, he thinks maybe he should have put the damned book down more often!***
Yeah, it is interesting how he knows so much about dragns isn't it? The whole time I was sitting back wondering where he learned so much? I mean if you listen carefully to everything he has to say about what he knows, you definatly wouldn't want him as an enamy with his extensive knowledge about everything. All I can say is I had a few theories, but was shocked to find out what you will find out in time.
Here is a fun idea, take a stab at some theories or opinions you may have about this book. What you like so far, wish was different, and then also say what you think is going to happen, or what you would want to happen even if you don't think it will happen. I would love to read what people think this early into the book.
Okay, that's a good idea so it isn't spoiled for the others. I actually have a funny story to tell you that involves the book and Amanda and last ngiht anyway...
Amanda, how far did you end up getting in the book last night?
Good thing I didn't read that right, huh? Maybe you should make a thread for the entire book. Those of us who HATE spoilers won't go peeking, I promise!

I don't actually have a lot to add. This story is quite predictable and if you couldn't see Garrow's death coming, then you probably have never read any fantasy before, ever.
The only thing really unique to this book that I have seen so far is the business with the scales. Usually, dragons are described as having a spot between their shoulders at the base of the neck, suitable for a rider or two. A saddle would merely be a convenience.
