The ancients believed in many gods.
I think they also FEARED all of those gods as unpredictable strangers whom .... it was necessary to figure out just what kind of meal they wanted next.
I think the subtle change which occurred over time is that the belief turned from many gods to one (amalgam?) God with power over everything.
Now the focus was not so much fear of this God but rather, on becoming FAMILIAR with this God and then -utilizing the right psychological tricks of the trade- MANIPULATING this God to do special favors for his friends.
Lots of praise and worship and singing beautifully and constant speeches to him containing the right key words ....... would keep him charmed and pouring out blessings.
