an animal soul (nephesh) which we are born with and this feels the life of the animal nature:
but the neshama (candle of the Lord)or breath of God that he blew into Adam to make him a higher soul, a living nephesh, this was lost at the fall or assertion of the ego over the soul:
now the neshama (candle) is put out, hence only the animal part with an imagination survives:
lighting the neshama is the WORK of the soul overcoming the ego.......and it is done through connection with the GIVER OF LIFE for that which is FROM the giver.....spiritual life:
spiritual life is perception of all LIFE as ONE ENTITY, like NATURE reveals it to be:
