Forgive me, but you are not currently pregnant right? I seem to remember you being pregnant with twins a while back right? I don't know how that all turned out, so update me on how you're doing please!
I did receive my TAC from Dr Haney. If you are going to pick a Dr...he is one of the best! Probably in the top 2 in the US! The other is Dr Davis out of New Jersey. I live in South Dakota and Dr Haney was an in-network provider for me, so there really was no issue with insurance. The only thing with out of state providers is that you can't do phone consultations...but Dr Haney does those for free anyways, so that was no big deal. The first day I met him was the day of my surgery! He is the most WONDERFUL Dr I've ever met! He is what Dr's should be like! Caring, compassionate, great listener and he goes above and beyond. I recommend calling to schedule a phone consult with you and he can explain things so well! I also recommend you check out the Abbyloopers board on Yahoo. Those women know their stuff!http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Abbyloopers
But here's my story. We scheduled my surgery for Wed. May 25th this past summer and flew in to Chicago the day before...I had my surgery the next day at noon. Dr Haney was awesome. He prefers to do traditional "open" TAC, where they make about a 3-4 inch incision on your bikini line. Some Dr's do it laproscopically, but Haney said the recovery time is so similar he prefers to be more hands on to ensure he ties a tight knot on the band. I was in the hospital 1 night, which is standard...DH got to stay in the room with me on a cot. Haney came in and saw me the next day...explained we could ttc as soon as I wanted...even today if I was up for it! (which was a joke of course)....he said he got the band placed at the very top of my cervix and that everything went perfectly. He was so certain this was what I needed.
We were discharged the next day and Haney recommends you stay in town 1 more night after that to ensure no complications arise. We stayed 2 nights b/c we couldn't get a flight home until Saturday. I spent the 2 days walking the halls and the courtyard of the hotel b/c walking is very important to do with abdominal incisions, it really helps the healing process. But at the airport, I got a wheelchair escort...which was awesome. I was off work for 1 week total...so I went back the following Wednesday....still pretty slow but able to do desk work easily enough. By 2 weeks I felt lots better (60%) and by 4 weeks, I was 100% healed.
DH & I ttc 2 weeks after the surgery...just naturally. Continued that for a couple months and still no luck (no surprise there), so we went back to my local RE and did what we did before that got me pg...gonal f with timed intercourse and got lucky on the first try! Awesome!
I'm currently 22w3d. Fingers crossed! I still emailed Dr Haney regularly with updates and he always replies right away. He's amazing, truly!
Here are some benefits of the TAC:
1. You can get it placed prepregnancy. --->which appealed to me b/c my losses were on the earlier side for "IC Women" and I always felt like by the time I was far enough along to get a TVC, it would be too late! And I've read that the cervix can start changing at 9 weeks. I also liked it b/c I don't like the idea of having "procedures" done during pregnancy. I already feel so fragile in a pregnant state the last thing I want is something that could cause complications! And getting it done prepreg meant I could have all the pain killers I want and not feel bad about it! LOL!
2. Much lower risk of bedrest (which is important b/c I work full time)
3. Much higher success rate (I think Haney's is 98%!!)
4. And tons more I can't even think of.
The only downside some might say is you have to have a c-sec b/c the TAC is permanent. But most women who are recommended for a TAC don't mind that little caveat at all! I think you are very lucky to have a Dr recommending the TAC. The TAC is still so new out there that many Dr's don't believe in them or think they are "overkill" but they are the only answer for a lot of women where TVC's failed them. And with your history of going on bedrest with the twins, how incredible would it be to not have any bedrest! Not saying it never happens with TAC's, but it's very rare. And the women that do have to go on bedrest are always better off with the TAC then they would have been w/o it.
Insurance wise, I had to jump through a couple hoops in the beginning to get my insurance to pre approve it. Have my local RE send a letter stating I had IC. And then Dr Haney's office explained the benefits of a TAC and how it will pay off in the long run b/c no insurance company likes NICU stays and with TVC's, most babies end up still coming early and have expensive time in the NICU. DH & I didn't pain a dime for my surgery b/c we had already met our $1500 max out of pocket for the year, so everything else was covered 100%, I think the surgery was close to $30,000 too!!! I'll never complain about my insurance premiums again! LOL!
Sorry this got so long...please ask me any more questions you like!
