Hi Ladies,

I've been feeling overwhelmed and depressed, so about a week ago I started taking a natural herbal supplement/mood lifter called St. John's Wort. It's all natural and you can buy it at Whole Foods. Today I told the OB/GYN about it and she (aside from being very judgemental) said that I should stop taking it because it hasn't been studied. I know that they prescribe it in Europe for depression on a regular basis and have for years and years. This is the first time I've ever tried any sort of antidepressent at all.

Since I am doing this alone (single), I hesitate to mention it to my RE because I don't want him to think I'm unstable or something (that's how this Doc today made me feel) and think I need to not be depressed to treat me. Heck, this whole thing is a large part of the depression!

Anyhow use St. John's Wort or have input? I guess I can call my RE tomorrow and ask if needed...

There are not any studies about this drug and pg but there are many about prescription drugs that are effective at helping depression and are safe if you get pg. There are several girls on the Playgroup board who took anti-depressents during pg so maybe post there? Your RE will not decide you can't get pg; believe me they are here for the $$.

I know that you cannot go out in the sun if you take this drug b/c it becomes toxic when exposed to light (and the chemical is all over your body) so things such as skin rashes can result. Link:

I would not take it if it were me; just my honest opinion.
