Hello Frank
Your trouble may well be carburettor flooding, inside the bottom of the carburettor is a float chamber where a small float and float valve keep the level of petrol constant, this is very important as it is this that governs how rich or weak the engine will run
The most probable cause is either gunge in the petrol building up around the little valve causing it to not seat properly or a small peice of dirt sticking the valve open,
In either case the carburettor will be overfull of petrol and most probably coming out of the rubber overflow pipe ( located on the bottom of the carb )
This is what is causing the smell of petrol, the bike will also be hard to start as the mixture will be very rich
Be carefull not to lose the little white float valve or the spindle when you dismantle the carb to clean it
need any more help feel free to mail me
