...because changing piston rings really isn't a big job, assuming that's all it is. Worst case, I would say you need to replace the piston as well (and all of the gaskets/bearing/pin/circlips, of course).
However, I don't know that this is your main problem. Sudden stalling out like this shouldn't occur because of poor compression (I guess it could if your rings blew apart instantly, but that's unlikely). Besides, even at 80 psi I think it should still run. I think that it is more likely that you have a clogged fuel line or carburetor.
I'm not an expert, so you'll have to wait for one of their replies, but in my opinion you shouldn't rush into a $400 engine rebuild. Which, by the way, sounds really high to me. Look for a more simple answer first. Good luck!
