I just thought of something else. What if I re-installed the float incorrectly and it's not shutting off the incoming fuel to the carb? Would that cause fuel to flood the carb and overflow into the cylinder and the engine to race out of control? I think I'll go try to start it with the bowl full and the fuel shut off. I'll be back !
