Remove the oil supply line from the oil pump. Does it smell like Gas??
I had a simular problem and found out the the fuel/oil tank had a leak and was allowing gasoline to siphon into the oil tank. My fix was to just go to pre-mix gas and block off the oil pump. I'd be careful about starting it until you knew for sure that the oil pump is pumping oil and not a deluted look alike.
