Take out the spark plug, bring the piston up to TOP-DEAD Center(TDC). Is the mark on the flywheel lined up to the TDC line? It's been so long since I worked on one, I can't remember the look of it.
The `F' or firing line should be about 20 degrees PAST the marker on the bike.....in other words, with the correct rotation direction, the `F' line should line up with the marker BEFORE the piston comes up to within a millimeter or two of the TDC position, AND the points should be opening when the `F' line aligns with the marker.
You can just take an induction timing light and hook it to another battery with the inductor wire clamped on the spark plug wire, and time it by marking the `F' line with bright chalk or crayon....like timing a car.
I had understood that the only way to SLIGHTLY change the timing on those was to change the gap of the points. They should gap at .014" (inches, not millimeters). Hope this helps. don-ohio
