NC50 Express-poor acceleration

by chris (no login)

I have a 1982 NC50 Express. When I open the throttle, I don't get nice, smooth acceleration, but rather the engine cuts out, sometimes for many seconds, and then usually, begins to accelerate, but rather poorly. I've done the easy things like replace spark plug, checked that air filter is not obstructing intake, and tinkered with the fuel-mixture adjustment screw. BTW, when I turn the fuel-mixture screw, it doesn't seem like I'm getting any response (no increase/decrease in engine rpm. Any ideas on how to improve this poor engine response during acceleration? Thanks!
