hello everyone.
I've have had this problem a few times. the ratchet mechanism that holds the starting spring in place every time you wind it up flips around and now I cant start it. I know that if i just drain the oil and take off all those darned bolts and the crankcase it'll just be flipped the wrong way and I'll just flip it back and it will work fine, until it happens again. so my questions are:
Is there some sort of spring that is supposed to prevent this from happening? how should it be set?
Is there an easier way of reseting this thing without having to take it all apart?
Does anyone else have this problem?
THANKS!!!

I am near giving up on getting my 1980 honda express nc50 to run. I can get it started by manually choking the intake on the carb with my hand, it will run with the choke out and in, but if i open the throttle, it will run fast and then die like it is starving for fuel. Also when it starts, it runs really fast. Any ideas? It sat over the winter a couple of winters ago, so i have cleaned the petcock and carb. Is there a source for the Keihin carbs or any aftermarket alternatives. What size is this carb? Keihin makes i think 28 mm carbs, but I am not sure how they would fit this applivation. The headlight also just blew out. I have the battery hooked up, but did not check to see that the fuse is still good. I know that running it without the battery blows the headlight, but if the fuse is good, what is the name of the thing that i replaced one time? I think it was the rectifier. Thanks for your help.

There is a passage after you remove the float bowl that gets missed almost every time someone attempts to clean the carb. It's underneath and hard to find.
But you might have a cap not venting like in the lower post where i told him to clean petcock and make sure the cap is venting.
Also replace a spark plug at the first sign of trouble.
If you have an air inleakage, you can find that by spraying carb cleaner at connections of carb to intake, intake to engine,or cylinder base to block.Do this when the engine isn't too hot,and notice for any roughness or rpm changes down or up.
Your carb is WAY smaller than a 28mm,so don't try that. don-ohio

I'm trying to get this express running. It will idle roughly it will accelerate but then it cuts out and dies. I've roasted the exhaust, cleaned the carb twice, I've got good gas flow out of the tank, with cap off,
I put that cap on either way and it flows good for 20 seconds then down to about a 1/4 flow. Bad cap?
Are there any moped junk yards around? Besides ebay?
Any cheap modification tips? Any help would be appreciated Thanks

...........might be like the one on an Express I fixed for a friend. If you turn it ALL the way to vent,it quits venting.....but if you back it off just a little,it will vent.
Yeah, the cap is probably your problem, but in case you haven't yet removed the petcock(gas valve)and cleaned the screen and valve,go ahead and do this. don-ohio

The 2007 California Motorcycle Handbook states, on page 3, that:
If you operate a motorized bicycle which meets the definition of VC §406[b], you: • Must be 16 years of age or older. • Must wear a properly fitted and fastened bicycle helmet. • Are exempt from the motor vehicle financial responsibility, driver license, and moped plate requirements. (VC §12804.9)
This says to me that there are NO licensing requirements for riders or their mopeds that meet VC 406(b) definition.
I'd like to hear from other riders who have shown that handbook to a cop.
Thanks,
Anton

The current Calif Motorcycle Rider's Handbook, page 3, states that:
"If you operate a motorized bicycle which meets the definition of VC §406[b], you: • Must be 16 years of age or older. • Must wear a properly fitted and fastened bicycle helmet. • Are exempt from the motor vehicle financial responsibility, driver license, and moped plate requirements. (VC §12804.9"
This seems to contradict a previous post by Jim stating that a Class C license is required. When I first read the Vehicle Code requirements, it seemed a Class C was required, but I hope/plan to ride a moped without one, carrying a copy of the Rider's Handbook in case of trouble.
Any comments?
Thanks,
Anton

The rectifier changes the AC voltage from alternator(magneto) to DC to battery,so checking the terminal connections for the battery should show DC charging voltage when running.
There IS a fuse that can blow, and the battery charging voltage can't get thru to battery,I think. don-ohio

How do I check the headlight to make sure it isn't burned out ? Also, how about power coming out of the lighting coil ? Which color wire is it ? I am having a problem that everything works besides the headlight . The previous owner ran it without a battery and I heard that is bad . I did have to replace the tailight bulb. But now it works, the horn works but the headlight doesn't work. I need to figure out what is wrong. If I unhook the battery and run the ped for a min and see if the tailight works, would that tell me if the lighting coil works ?
Thanks,
Raz

Running without a battery is usually the cause of blowing the lights. To test the headlight, just cross the terminals thru the ohmmeter with the light unhooked. If the filament has continuity(light is good),ther ohmmeter needle will register. The needle won't move if the filament is bad,and i think it probably IS bad.
OR you can just hook a lantern battery(6V)to the light while unhooked from the bike, and it should show some light.

.......on the Honda Express listed on this site,I believe. It will allow you to replace future bulbs very cheaply.
Just remember that the Express could comfortably not run over a 30 watt headlight bulb..I would personally run a 25 watt bulb after this mod. don-ohio

My 78' express when ran full throttle down the road blows out oil all over the rear rim from the exhaust . Is this normal, also, is there anyway the oil pump can be turned down ? It is black oil, not trans oil coming out the overflow.
Thanks,
Raz

I don't think it has an adjustment.A thicker bodied oil might inject at a lesser rate,so try that.
Some folks just disconnect the oil pump and pre-mix all their fuel at 32;1.
I don't know how to disconnect the oil line, but a search would turn that info. up for you.Hit `cached' when you get the results you want to view.
Also,on www.mopedarmy.com you can holler for `Jax',and he knows quite a bit about the Express. Also www.mopedriders.com don-ohio

...........on a hot fire downwind of any neighbors, and then shake out the ashes, or some have said that oven cleaner or drain cleaner will work.I roast mine and repaint them.
Be sure to check the exhaust port opening at the cylinder when you remove the muffler, and you might just want to go ahead and remove the head and decarbonize it if you have the skill. don-ohio

.............the lower part of the bike, but I've forgotten. The answer is here in these many posts, but searching is pretty tough.Almost all other bikes VIN#s are on the front of the headset(where headlight area is).
But I'm thinking the Expresses was lower than that.Since this forum is pretty dead, you can inquire at www.mopedriders.com and someone will probably know. don-ohio (:^D

Was recently in an accident in which the moped currently is inoperable. Can anyone with an operating 1978 Honda Express NC50 tell me how many feet the bike will go from a stopped postion in 4 seconds with a person weighing 280-300 lbs. Thanks for your help.
