It's obviously a fuel delivery problem. The first thing I would check is to make sure that the bowl is full of gas. As soon as the engine dies, turn off the petcock and then open the bowl drain screw - does gas come out? If not, you may have a clogged fuel line or filter or your float level is set too low.
You could also have one of the carb passageways clogged. In order for the bowl to deliver gas thru the jet(s) and in to the Venturi you have to have a flow of outside air into the bowl. If not, the bowl will become a vacuum and stop delivering gas until something fills the space (ie. gas from the fuel tank) and then it lets you restart and it'll run for 15 more seconds.
Hope this helps

Does anyone know how I can find one. My mechanic says previous owner "overtightened the jet" and I need another carb with jet and choke slide. Thanks!

... OK, I managed to sort out my wife's Gyro 'Up' to the point where it now starts and runs, but I can't get the idle speed down. I've unscrewed the idle screw until it's not actually doing anything and still the engine runs really fast - if I took the parking brake off it would fly off on it's own!
Is there something I'm missing? Any help would be greatly appreciated - I'm so near and yet so far!
Thanks

when doing the carb, make sure the 'barrel' throttle body sleeve , is put in correctly or it won't go up and down, it will be stuck in the up position-full throttle, if it is not facing the correct way.
also check the tension on the throttle cable to make sure it is not holding the throttle open

Turns out the problem was 2 things - the throttle cable was very tight in the sleeve and was sticking, and the adjuster (at the handlebar end) was too tight.
Today is the first time in months that I've been able to ride the Gyro and it's almost there - the only problem I have now is when I ride uphill, the engine really seems to 'bog down' and splutters - I'm not sure if it's too rich? Or maybe it's something to do with the float?
Many thanks again, the bike would still be sitting in pieces if it wasn't for you guys!!

This scooter was running good. Every now and then it would act like it ran out of gas when at full throttle. The problem got more frequent and at lower speeds. It also sputters when turning. When it quits it only takes a few seconds to restart. Whats up ? Float needle ?

Havent ridden my moped in about 3 months (broke the belt). I recently located one at a local bike shop (35 bucks, ouch.). Anyways, i put the belt in, and all was well (i didnt have time to ride it yet). Went to start it today, No start. She gets spark, and i know she's gettin gas. The sparkplug was replaced at the beginning of the year (I replace it every year). But im like oh well, i was going to redo the wiring anyways. So i have the moped in my basement, and the motor/front half of the bike are seperated, and i was wondering.
Is this an nc50 or nu50? I dont know if the wiring diagrams will differ at all. and if so, do the online manuals have the schematics and such so i knwo how big of a gage and length (good happy stuff like that) i need?
And for only having 6,134 miles (i dont know if thats alot on a moped), should i just go all out and rebuild?
And should this be burning oil if im not running a premix? i dont mind the blue smoke, i just always wondered.
Thanks,
Bill

hey, i got my new nu50 engine parts on, one question, what are the running in specs for the engine (honda camino engine kit).
its an nu50 with a honda camino kit on it, but it runs just fine, however i dont know quite how to run it in, so if you could tell me how to run it in safely i would be very grateful.

I have a 79 Express and have a couple of questions. Do you know where to get a new muffler for one? Also, in order to get it to run, I have to pump both the throttle and the rear brake handle. Any idea why the brake handle has anything to do with it? Thanks.

yea the rear brake handle also disingages a latch. in the transmission there is a latch that falls in place with a gear, the gear is attached to the starter spring. when u crank the pedal the spring tightens, when u are done cranking it the latch is engaged and is holding back the spring. when u pull the rear brake this also disengages the latch which allows the spring to unwhined and thus cranking over the engine. the muffler in my experience has been hard to come by. check e-bay or bikebandit.com

Expresses have a 2 stroke engine. 2 stroke engines have horrible troque at low rpm. if you can, before you hit the hill, make sure the rpm is up and you are going at a good speed. The high rpm power + momentum from the speed will maintain your speed up the hill. That would be the most liekly situation unless if your engine needs attention.

Take spark plug out and shoot a little gas in,put plug back in and if it starts,it's probably NOT getting gas ! Blow out all lines and put a filter in the line. Most likely, crud in the tank !

hey everyone,
i left my ped outside for a few days in the rain without starting it and now it wont start. i did a search for troubleshooting i couldnt find much. it has spark, the gas line to the carb is fine (although the gas is bright blue again). and what im asuming is the oil line (comes out right behind the gas line from the tank) is working too although its the same blue gas misture as the gas line. i havent tried starting fluid yet cus i havent been able to go out to get some. where do i start?

Remove the oil supply line from the oil pump. Does it smell like Gas??
I had a simular problem and found out the the fuel/oil tank had a leak and was allowing gasoline to siphon into the oil tank. My fix was to just go to pre-mix gas and block off the oil pump. I'd be careful about starting it until you knew for sure that the oil pump is pumping oil and not a deluted look alike.

ok, this is definitly a problem, maybe not THE problem but im gettin somewhere. so how do i go about disconnecting the oil pump? just atatch the input hose to the output on the pump? and how bad would it be for the ped to have been running on this high oil mixture?

If this is the same problem I had, you were running on a thinned out oil supply. If the engine is'nt froze up, you're probably alright. To disconnect the oil pump, all I did was;
Removed the supply oil line from the tank to the oil pump and block off. I used vacuum caps for a carb. I purchased them at Auto Zone.
Remove the oil line from the pump to the carb. Block off the nipple on the carb the same as you did for the pump inlet. I didn't at first and my engine ran too lean. The nipple on the pump outlet will just blow off the vacuum cap, so I just left that one uncapped.
Drain the oil tank dry as well as the gas tank. If you can, drain the gas out of the carb.
Be sure to leave the supply line from the oil tank to the oil pump disconnected and plugged.
Premix your gas to 25:1 mix.
Make up some sort of tag and put on the tank by the gas fill stating to use premix fuel only.
I have run my mo ped about 150 mi. so far since I did this and everything is running fine. Even starts better. Good luck, I hoped I helped you.
Pete
