the tail light filament is hooked to the brown wire going to the light.

the wire should be on when the key is on, if the battery is dead it won't come on until the engine is running..

if the brown wire is not on trace the connections to find the bad spot.

start at the back and follow the wiring to the front, most of the connections are in the headlight housing, behind the headlight.. the brown wire hooks into the key switch

Express SR NX50M questions

by (no login)

Is there a good aftermarket exhaust for the SR and, if so, where is it available? Is there a big bore cylinder kit that someone has had good success with? If so, what carb was used with the kit?

Parts needed: airbox complete (right side and left side), rear fender assembly, exhaust assembly, 1982 owner's manual, headlight assembly, etc. Would consider a parts bike also.

by (no login)

There are several larger main jets available from Honda. For sure you can get a #78 and a #80, but then the question is does the oil injection increase to keep the proper ratio in the gas? Anyone got any experience in this? In addition, there should be someone who makes an exhaust for this puppy. Just gutting the stock exhaust is not the best option.

Hello everyone, new to the club.....Can somebody tell me how to properly adjust the carburetor on the above referenced moped. Also, others have told me that this ride is an 'A3' but I have never seen that anywhere on the ped. They've also told my I have a 'Silver Buller' but once again, all it really says is 'Bullet'. Please help.

If it's an Encarwi or a Dellorto, you can only adjust the idle speed, but not mixture. I have a Silver Bullet. They generally have a battery and turn signals and mag wheels. don-ohio

length of 1979 express ii throttle cable

by (Login berglaur)

I took my bike in for a tune up and the people there broke my throttle cable (aargh!) and I cannot find another to replace it. I found one for a 1980 express II, but it is barely too long. The people threw away the old cable so I can't use it as an example to get one custom made. If anyone has any information about the specs on the throttle cable for a 1979 Honda Express II NA-50, I would really appreciate your help.

the local Honda dealer should be able to order it for you.

But, if he can't ,find a good shop that services motto cross bikes.. and get a universal throttle cable.

they come complete with the hand grip, ready to mount and are adjustable in length .. they are made for
DIY ( do it yourself ) custom replacements

moto cross guys break the cables a lot.

Re: clutch

by (Login themopedwhiz)
Moped Gurus

the bore is 40MM diameter (the piston will be slightly smaller) you order by bore size..

the stroke is 39.3mm

the Urban does not have a 2 position clutch

all the Honda Express centrifugal clutches are a one ratio/gear deal

a clutch engages or not.. speed changes are done with other parts of the tranny

the 81 2 speed uses planetry gears, and the Urban uses a variable size belt pulley called a 'variator'

no gas flow

by (no login)

about every 2 miles, the main jet gets clogged and wont let gas through, and i have to take apart and clean, its not the gas nozzle or a clog in the tank or a bad hose, its the jet that clogging up, why does it keep getting clogged? a bad needle maybe? do i need to adjust the needle? i do not have a fuel filter on it, could this be causing the problem? i sometimes can see dirt particles in the fuel hose, but they look so small that i dont think the fuel filter will stop it, any other ideas on what it could be? any advice would be appreciated, thanks Mark

filter needed

by 50plus (no login)

If you can see stuff in your fuel you have a serious need for a filter. AFTER you clean your tank.
Filters will stop stuff you can't see at all.
This is certainly your problem. Clean the tank, add a filter and you still may have to clean out your carb.

Biturbo carb adjustments, jets, airscrew

by (Login JesseLJames)

ok so i got the biturbo on and i have noticed a thing
it was running a top speed of 30-35 for a while the recently it has dropped down to 27 wtf
i dont have the idle and air mix adjusted right i guess
also what year did they start using unscrewable jets?
i have a 81
i checked my sparkplug out (new) and it was half tan and half wite
i know that white is bad but can i adjust the air screw to make up for it?
i have searched but nothing really answers my question
also when i am starting out untill the engine warms up it seems it sputters alot
but now recently it does it all the way up to top speed
it would be really cool it this question was posted on the express info page that way you could always direct ppl there instead of answering it everytime
also when ppl put not spacific/ informative subject lines it doesnt help the search much

what spark plug # are you using..

you need to be using the 5 or 6 the 4 is to light for the bore kit.

adjust the carb..

run PREMIX fuel 4 Oz of oil to 1 gallon of gas

to NOT trust the oil pump to move enough oil if you are using a bore kit.. it is marginal once you change the exhaust.

if you add electrical acesseries the ignition power will go down..

Re: no bore kit just biturbo

Moped Gurus

premixing solves several problems

you know you are going to get exactly the same gas-oil ratio at all times..

these pumps don't always work as well as they did when new..

the pump system relies on the pump injecting/blowing the oil into the incoming air gas stream and premixing fuel eliminates that and makes for a better system and was design with the original air flow, which is now faster because of the mods

it makes adjusting the carb less work , because it usually once you get it set you won't have to change it

Big bore 87 elite compression

by (Login natespaint)
Moped Riders

Thanks mopedwhiz, u were right about my scooter's low compression. (I posted a month ago or so, u might not remember). So what to do about it? I have the original piston and cylinder. I think I could easily swap that in. But could I also repair the big bore kit without buying a new one? Bore it out or something and put in another piston?

Well, right now the compression is 75. It runs and goes not bad at all. Definitely has more pep than with the 50cc engine it used to have. But I'm sure it's hell on gas, that doesn't bother me. But how long can I keep driving it like this? What can I do to prevent more compression loss? I had the oil pump rigged to full open, but when I checked compression the chicken wire had come loose and no longer was open. So I dribbled some oil directly into the gas. Is a cap full for a 1.5 gallon tank approximately ok? (Like a cap on a 10w-40 oil container)

I know I probably won't be bringing it back to the university next year. I hope to bring my car instead of flying to save money. The scooter will take it's place in my pile of things I'm saving because of sentimental value, and no monetary value

Thanks yall,
Nate

to keep things from getting worse..
4oz of oil to one gallon of gas, forget about the pump it doesn't move enough oil

and contact the dealer you bought the big bore from.
he might have a set of replacement piston rings..

before putting on the new rings
you would need to lightly hone the inside of the cylinder , a shop could do this for you

Disable oil pump?

by (Login natespaint)
Moped Riders

Should I disable the oil pump, or can I add just a fraction of 4 oz oil/ gallon gas? How easy is it to disable the pump?

Also, do I need to mix the gas and oil in a separate container, or can I just pour oil into the tank when I top up the gas at the gas station?

Thanks

disable pump is easy

by (Login themopedwhiz)
Moped Gurus

disconnect the pump output hose from the car/intake nipple

Cap the nipple ( no vacuum leak )

and plug the hose... drain the oil tank

for most people it best to premix the gas & oil in a gas can.. say 2 or 3 gallons

so you get the perfect mix..

shake the can well , before filling or topping off your scooter tank

when the can is empty ( not the tank ) mix a new can of fuel.. that way you will always have the same mix

adding oil to the tank and then putting in the gas.. is usually a hit and miss problem.

unless you know exactly how much gas the tank will hold and carry a pre-measured bottle of oil and drive into the gas station as soon as your scooter starts to sputter..

yes you can carry the bottle for emergencies.. and use the can .. then if you get forgetful or what ever you won't have to push the scooter home

I carry a 4 Oz bottle in the tool pack, but i try to keep the tank topped off with the premix can..

if i run low/out i pour in the oil and pump exactly 1 gallon of gas into the tank.

1 gallon gass tank, bogging, ratio

by (Login JesseLJames)
Moped Riders

if i went pre mix what ratio should i go if i only have the biturbo... how much gass will i mix with one grt of oil? (so i know how big of gass can to buy
and
is there any way to open up my half oil half gass tank so that the whole thing is gass (so i can go further without refueling
also
what does bogging and sputtering tell you about lean/rich problems and oil mixing ratios
and
does a 81 pump a diffrent type of gass when its at full throttle vs idle and does a older version pump a constant rate of oil

so many questions

by (Login themopedwhiz)
Moped Gurus

the ratio is 25:1.... 4 Oz of oil 1 gallon of gas..

the premix ratio for the express is ALWAYS the same.

the pump squirts 1 shot of oil per revolution of the crankshaft..

Honda builds the pump so that on a stock bike the oil squirt and the gas from the carb jet equal approximately this ratio 25:1

when you change jets, exhausts, cylinders and the like or combinations of these things, you change the amount of gas but you can't modify the pump. So you end up with NOT ENOUGH oil and things get screwed up.

stock bike with a bad pump or a big bore and bi-turbo exhaust it still uses the same oil ratio..

this is the ratio of oil to gas that the Honda engine needs in order to keep working right..and stay together

spree electrical problems

by (no login)

I have an 84 Honda Spree that I took to a dealer because it kept blowing the fuse every time I turned the key on. I got the bike back (along with a bill for $184!!!) and the horn had been taken out, the brake light didn't work, and I got a song/dance from the service dept over the phone that "parts weren't available, so we had to do a jury-rigging wiring job".

Well, I got it running, but I don't think it is charging the battery, and the brake light doesn't light up. The bulb is good, both wires coming into back of rear light socket have power to them.....what can I do to make the brake light work? and how can I tell if the battery is getting charged? How long does it need to idle to charge the battery?

I would say several hours to charge which would likely over heat the motor..

it's not supposed to set and idle , like that

the taillight/brake light is a 3 wire system

green is supposed to be grounded and the tail light (brown wire )on-hot when the key is on

the brake light wire, should only be hot when the brake is used

Engine help needed, 1989 Elite E engine to 1987 Elite lx engine

by (Login ntonar)

I have a 1989 Elite E, the starter motor took a **** on me and the engine cover (one that holds the kick start moon gear) has also broke (kick start won't work due to this). So I have no way of starting the scooter.

I bought a 1987 Elite LX motor the one that has a black cover. I was wondering if the starter motors are the same, and what I would need to do to swap the LX motor into the Elite E, or what would be my best option.

The elite E motor needs
-Starter
-Engine cover

Here is a pic of the LX engine so you can see what I all have

Honda is fairly consistent in the engine packages,

make a few measurements comparing the distant between mounting points front and rear..

I'll bet the 87 engine will fit right in..

you may or may-not have to swap exhaust and carbs depending on mounting clearances or port directions.

85 Spree only 30mph After lots of MODs?!?

by (Login halcyon026)
Moped Riders

I started with the Iowa spree going 25mph i believe. Got a normal spree muffler, drilled it. Got a K&N cone type filter, Did the pulley mod. After all this it only goes 30!! I can only think of a few things that might cause this...
Air leaking in near the carb
Needs a new top end. What should the compression be?
The Clutch pads are pretty bad could this cause it?
The automatic choke being bad?

The clutch pads look pretty bad... But if it were the clutch causeing this problem wouldnt the bike start off really slow but still reach a higher top speed than 30mph? It doesnt feel like its slipping but ive only ridden this spree before so i cant compare.

One more thing. I wanna buy an Elite 50cc something like a 91. but older is ok too. Ive searched ebay and cycletrader with no luck, any idea's where to find one?

Thanks!

Spree

My 86 was going about 27mph It is bone stock, I just put a new air filter in and I got about 32mph out of it. I am going to Drill the exhaust, and do the pulley mod. My spree has about 900 miles on it, I think last time I checked the compression it was about 120psi.

I also have an 89 elite that I need to get going, I ordered parts three days ago so it should be going soon. I would like to see how it holds up next to the spree. Elite has a new top end. -Nick

look in 'Cycle Buys' from Recycler

by (Login themopedwhiz)
Moped Gurus

you did put in a new belt, when you did the pulley mod.. if the belt is to short/tight or too long you won't hit top speed

if it's too short you can't get max gear ratio

if it's to long you it will slip

and if your near the weight limit of the scoot, nothing will help very much.

but by all means do check the belt and the clutch pads..

also make sure you have adjusted the carb , so to make max use of the better 'breathing' the engine now has with the new filter and exhaust mods

Now that the bore kit is installed and everything should have been ready it only allows me to kick the the ratchet start down like 4 times and when I press the brake lever it turns over but only once. When I pull off the points chrome cover I can turn the screwuntil it feels like somehting releases like a spring in the crankcase but agian only allows me to kick it down 4 times. If I take the crank case cover off I dont want any springs to release so how should I take it off so that wont happen. And if anyone knows what the problem is please help me I really want to start riding again.

Re: crankcase problem

by (Login themopedwhiz)
Moped Gurus

OK..

lets assume that you didn't remove the tranny cover or touch any ajustments, like the tranny release lever by the carb or tighten the rear brake..

that would mean that your new piston and cylinder are too tight / have too much friction... or you have really way too much compression..

did you oil evrything when you put it togethere
the rings, the piston, the piston/rod pin..

you where careful with the cylinder alignment so the piston is centered, the cylinder isn't a fraction off center.. pinching the piston..

me.. i would pull the cylinder off..

MAKE sure the tranny spring is released or you damage something or get hurt.. like a broken finger

I have took off the spark plug to see if the compression was the problem and it wasnt. I can release the spring through the points cover but i have to do that each time I want to kick the engine over, and I dont want to keep doing that because the bolt is getting stripped. Im almost positive it is in the crankcase. You need to remove the cylinder

odds are the piston has been scuffed or melted

the rings are jammed and there is aluminum sticking to the steel.

either you didn't have enough oil in the fuel mix
( you have to run premix when using a bore kit )

or the cylinder was NOT centered
