After adding a small gas engine (Honda GX31) to my bicycle, I learned I really like the idea of mopeds (which is why I am here). Peddling on bicycle paths with the engine off is nice and I could use a lot more power.
So, what is a very fast moped that I can find in the U.S., without needing 1000s of modifications ? I guess I'm looking for a moped with 49cc, well over 2 HP, and goes faster than 30 mph UPHILL.
Could I register a 100c moped as a motorcycle if necessary?
Thanks !

Calif has 2 registrations 49cc & under with pedals.. 'moped' 'motorized bicycle' a electric bicycle is a moped under calif DMV
no pedals or anything over 49cc motorbike/cycle
to operate on limited access highways 'the freeway' it
has to be a motorcycle over 150cc
yes you can/must register a 100cc bike/scoot as a motorcycle
but you will only be able drive it on 'surface' streets and roads. like 'PCH'
as far as the fasest moped, the predator might qualify,
I don't have the link since i had to reformat this hard drive 2 weeks ago , but there is a dealer in florida with a picture of a stock moped doing a burnout and smoking the rear tire while the front brake is being held tight.. and that model can be de-restricted to up the top speed to over 40 mph
somebody else, might have thelink handy i have the picturein my backup files someplace..
likely there is a calif dealer..

hey everyone, i found this Urban Express Deluxe today and i was wonderin what the goin price for one is. i know little about mopeds but i can tell that it doesnt run. the housin that the drive belt is supposed to be in is open and the belt is missin. i have a pic of the moped, i can send it to anyone if that might help get me a price "qoute". i found a few classifieds askin $200 - $500 for a runnin express. but that doesnt tell me much on this one. from the looks of it the engine needs work (which is no big deal, cause i plan on doin some performance mods) and it might need a new tranny, or just some serious work. but any info would be great. I never liked mopeds, but this one got my attention and i think i got my new toy (if i can afford all parts and what not). thanx ahead of time.

I need to clean a carb on a pa 50 ( Hobbit)and do not want to disassemble the entire bike to get to it. Any ideas . I think the job is to big for me . Bike runs as long as gas or starting fluid is sprayed into the carb . Bike just sat to long . It's in excellent condition and I do not want to ruin it .

Take of the air filter cover and try spraying Carb Cleaner into the carb. This certainly isn't a perfect answer. Astually removing the carb and cleaning it is the ultimate answer. But you might get lucky. Good luck.

Yamaha makes a carb. cleaner that you mix with gas,
you have to drain the fuel from the float bowl and
fuel lines and pour this mixture in. you got to rock
the ped from side to side and briefly hit the starter
to draw mixture into jets and passages. after one hour
drain mixture, reinstall fuel lines and let fresh gas
into the float bowl. if it won't start or runs
improperly, you got to drain the gas from the float
bowl, put in fresh carb. cleaner mix, circulate thru
the carb. and let sit overnight.this only helps get
rid of varnish and fuel residue. if the carb, has
to be taken apart and cleaned I have used this cleaner
50/50 with hot water as a mix and have had good results

Hi
I posted earlier concerning no spark but there really was not a problem . Got it going bur carb is dirty will not run unless I spray gas continuosly into carb . Is there an easy way to clean carb like remove screws and clean with guitar string without taking the whole bike apart . I read zippy's instructions for breaking bike apart and actually printed them but that looks over my head . How about carb cleaner . The pa 50 hobbit is in mint condition?

1986 Honda Spree, cleaned carb, changed choke sensor, also put in new plug.It will run fine for about 5 minutes then shuts down.If I unhook fuel lines it will start after I crank on starter for a few minutes. It seem like I'm getting to much fuel, but don't know why, any answers?

Hi
I have a honda hobbit with a dirty carb which only runs when gas is sprayed into carb.I left it for a while and now I can't get any spark . I was checking the points and noticed that there was no compression through the spark plug hole unless turned the generator cover by hand . In other words the generator cover was only turning sporaticly while I cranked the pedals . Is there a drive belt slipping? There is plenty of compression when I turn the generator cover plate by hand but I cannot turn it fast enough by hand to get a spark . I am very confused because it was runing great just starving for gas .

Jesse,
Spray WD-40 over the center of the flywheel where the crank shaft is coming through (with the nut off)
Let sit for 15 minutes
Ether rent a flywheel remover
- or -
Wedge two screw drivers on opposite sides of the bottom of the flywheel and lift. If the doesn't work try taking a hammer and gently hitting the top of the crankshaft while prying up the bottom of the flywheel with one screwdriver.

hey i just popped open my 82 trans and i want to put it back together but i cant seem to get the srping that cranks the kickstater, its the one that gives resistance to the kick lever so it moves back up after a kick, back in properly
does anyone know how to do this well
also does anyone want to copy thier pages of their manual for the 82 express 2 speed trans?

hey
#1 what are the pros / cons of the expresses 2 speed trans
does it have better performance than the older single speed
am i able to take the guts out of a 2 speed trans along with the cover and mount them all in an older version trans?
does everything have the same footprint or are the rans completely diffrent
#2 i have heard of everyone talking about sr gears.... can i get some and put em on my 79 express....what gear is it that you switch out?
thanx

#2 buy an express Sr. good, bad ,wrecked, running,
but it won't do you any good.. those rear drive gears ( like the 3rd member of a car ) won't fit work in your trannys. they can be put in an NU50 'urban' with the aid of an adapter bushing,, the SR tranny is belt drive like the NU50.
jesse , if you did more reading, you would find these answers.. you found the questions, the answers are right there with the questions..

hey THW
yeah i know
right after i posted i did some reaserch ....
i guess i could try doing it the other way around
well thanx for your patience anyways
its unbelievable how many times one question is asked...
and you dont get pissed off at people for not reaserching (or maybe you do and dont show it well with a keyboard)
another question though and i have found answers but they differ
i have had people tell me that you CAN fit the intake stuff from a 79 on the 82 engine
also they tell me that all your hafto switch out on the 82 from the 79 is the flywheel and the points and everything will go together
i already have one persons opinion and directions...
how would you reccamend doing it?
thanx again

My express seems to be burning oil. The exhaust is really heavy and thick and when i hold a paper towel in front of the exhaust pipe it gets oil on it. it there something i can do to fix this?
Posted on Mar 10, 2004, 7:11 AM from IP address 24.119.194.238
Eric,
The Express has a 2 stroke engine. Therefore it burns 2 cycle oil along with the gas. That's the oil you are seeing at the exhaust. This is normal.
If you think it is smoking to much, you may need to adjust the amount of oil being mixed.

I have a Honda express 2. the problem is that the piston is broken along with the rings. I have managed to find a Honda express 1 at a moped salvage yard and was wondering if the pistons were interchangeable. Also any ideas on making it go faster. I would like to push it to its limits w/o doing much damage so that it will last a little while. Right now i have no idea what the max speed is does any one know?
thanks,

cylinder, head, piston & rings, even the wrist pin ( holding piston to rod )
the rings are already lapped into spec with that cylinder..
take care when putting in the head/cylinder bolts
8 to 10 ft lbs of toruqe is not very much and it is easy to over tighten the bolts and strip the engine case or warp the head..
also the cylinder bolt holes are loose enough that you can get the cylinder 'out of alignment ' in any direction and you end up scuffing the piston, when you run the engine..
make sure the cylinder is seated in the block and the piston is at the bottom of stroke before installing the head and tighening the bolts ; hand tighten before toruqeing them down.. USE a toruqe wrench.. borrow it or rentit.. get one for inch pounds and set it at 100 inch lbs..

Thanks for the great info. In fact the previous owner has already over torqued the head bolts leaving 2 of them stuck in there. But i am still interested in making it go faster. Was there an oversized piston and rings made for it? Is there enough room to have the cylinder bored out for an oversized piston? Any little tip on achieving a faster speed would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

hey i have a Honda earo 50 i think its a 86 model. i just rebuilt the engine and now i doesn't want to start, i checked the sparkplug to see if it sparks and i doesn't. i didn't toy with the stator, but i did accidentally take it apart. the moped was running before i took it apart without a working battery, but it wasn't very fast, so thats the reasoning for the rebuilding. so if anyone can help me with this little problem/ any info about this problem of mine it would be very helpful because i can't wait to get it fixed to do wellies :D.

motor engine swap nc50 na50 1982 on a 1979 two speed automatic transmission
by
(no login)
hey
i just baught a decent 1982 NC50 engine off ebay
i want to put it on my 1979 NA50
is there anything i need to know about moving this engine over
i have the old engine from the express II but some things on it needed to be replaced so i just baught another engine that way i most likely have at least one of everything to make it run
some things i am curious about are the parts that are interchangeable like the carb, brake lines, oil pump, any mounting hardware, starter lever, intake manifold, and any other things you can think of
what is the diffrence in performance on the 82 two speed and the original 79 single speed
thanx for your time!

Jesse, You are going to have to get a rear wheel to fit the 82 and you are going to have to switch to cdi ignition or remove old points system from the 79 and place on the 82. the other stuff should swap out. What are you going to do with the old engine? Don't won't to discourage you but I just made the same swap you are about to make, got the thing going and about 7 or 8 miles later, the 2-speed trans came apart. Went to the honda place to buy new parts - discontinued! This was a NOS Honda 2-speed. Did'nt have a mile on it! I don't know if this was a problem with the 2-speeds or not but just wanted to let you know. Anyway, the reason I asked about your extra motor is because I could use one or the other if are interested in selling one.

If Honda still sells them, then powersportspro.com has a nice site for ordering Honda parts. If not, you can fix yours by replacing the original inerds with a new lamp. It's been described on this site in the past. Maybe someone who's done it will repost the instructions. Running an NU-50 with a dead battery works, but it kills your low beam on the headlight.

I recently bought a Honda NC50 '84 model moped. It ran really well for a week and then suddenly lost power. After finding out that it was supposed to take unleaded fuel, not leaded, I drained the tank, cleaned the carby, changed the spark plug, Replaced the fuel and added some carby cleaner. It runs better, but still not much power. After replacing the spark plug, I checked it again the next day and it was black. Maybe there is too much oil comming through? Is this a common problem? I'm at a loss as to what to do. If anyone has any Ideas, please help. I'm inept when it comes to these things.
Posted on Mar 6, 2004, 10:31 PM from IP address 220.240.130.128
make sure you are using 'injector' oil for motorcycles Not weed wacker oil...
adjust the idle mix screw (bottom) 'IN' to lean the mix..
adjust idle speed screw (top) to maintain idle (if needed)
you may have to goto premixing your fuel..
sometimes the oil pump lets oil thru when parked.
this drips into the carb and into the intake..
creating a pool in the crankcase that fouls the spark plug.
