I just inherited a 1982 honda nu50 with 652 miles on the odometer. It has been sitting for about 10 years in an enclosed garage. It appears to be in excellent condition except for rotting tires, old battery (which was removed) and some dust. No corrosion and gas tank must have been drained as it looks clean. I need some help with parts to start off with. I plan on tires (tubes?), battery and carb kit. What other things do I need to look for before trying to start it up. I have turned over the engine slowly with the kick pedal and compression feels strong. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

yes these tires take tubes, and the front and rear are different sizes, one is 17 inch the other is 14 inch
any motorcycle shop can get them for you .. also you will need the battery before you start the engine , Unless you remove/disconnect all the lights..
a new headlight is over $30 , it's wise not to burn it out..
the lighting circuit will go up to 50 volts AC voltage when there is no battery..online
remove the spark plug and squirt a little injector oil into the hole and turn the crank a few times 'EASY' to spread the oil and let it set soit can losen the rings..
also asquirt or two into the carb mouth stright into the inake to lube the crank..
do this the day before you plan to start it.
it's likely there's a little varnish in the carb and tank and you may need to spray carb cleaner into the carb to start the engine..
your biggest headache will be the autochoke.
that's the little rectangle on the right front of the cylinder..
DO NOT open it..
disconnect the 3 hose ..' one at a time ' at the other end not at the choke. spray carb cleaner in each hose.
and put the hose back on where it came from
do these one at a time so as not to get confused..and soak over night before running your express.
i recommend doing this now.. and everyday untill you have the tires and battery.
there is an oil tank under the seat..
drain it out and put in new motorcycle injector oil..
any name brand is good.. I like havoline..
use injector oil NOT weedeater oil.
try to stay with one brand or you will be retuning the carb every time you add a different oil to the tank.
this oil lubes the crankcase and cylinder and is in the fuel mix that gets burned
also read through or google search this site aboutthe autochoke and carb adjustments..
with a little care you can get the bike running and broke in with out adjusting anything..
yeah it won't run perfect when first started but it will get better and better as things loosen up..
the more you adjust now while things are gummy, the more you will have to adjust later as things clean out while riding around.
everything you adjust now, will have to be re-adjusted latter.. the less you tweak it now, the happier you will be later
the more you ride these bikes the beter they get.

1982 Urban Express: Oil leak at top of case where wire comes out
by
(no login)
My issue:
I just picked up a very clean 1982 Hona Urban Express. It leaks oil after a while from the top of the oil casing where the wires come into the case (little square rubber houseing seats the wires).
It only leaks when running. I think I have too much oil in the pan????
How much oil does a 82 urban express case hold? There is NO dipstick, and you cannot see down in the pan to check the level.
Please reply to my e-mail only.
If you can help me, I'll mail you a beer!

Can anyone please tell me how to detach the choke cable at the carb on a 80 express. I have everything else removed but when I unscrew the bolt type head I see a spring and don't want to force anything. I am trying to restore this great little bike. $30.00 at a yard sale with 70 miles!
Posted on Feb 5, 2004, 9:39 PM from IP address 67.22.66.17
there is a sliding end that moves up and down when the choke cable is actuated..
unscrew the cable cap at the carb and where you see the spring.. spray carb cleaner and soak it good.. let it set for a while if it doesn't loosen up , spray some more..
if you have a bucket of parts cleaner unbolt the carb from the intake and let the whole carb soak in the parts cleaner until it comes loose..

William.....not to insult you, but we're gonna need details about what brand of bike, what model, etc., so we can make sure you're really the owner of it.
See, a guy might come on here planning to steal a moped and ask how to hotwire one, and we'd be unknowingly helping him do it.
So let's hear some details....how much did you pay, where'd you buy it,etc. Okay? don-ohio (:^)

Hi, as some of you know iv been repainting my 78 honda express...and i finished up the other day...everytrhing was fine...i started it up and let it run for a whle and it was running fine. Then last night i was informed to put clear coat on...which i was ggoing to do. Therees were some spots i missed when painting around the engine...so i figured insteda of covering it with newspapers...ill disatatch the frame and get the whole bike painted....so inorder to unattach the frame from engine...the rear brake needs to be disattached...so i started tinkering around with the brake cable down by the engine. BIG MISTAKE!! I took off the nut at the very end of the cable....and then realized that the cable was attached right below the carberator also. So...i messed around with that and finally got the nuts loose....and then...i realized it was impossible to disconnect the brake so i decided o well screw it... so i put the brake cable back together. Just to see....i plued the brake handle(which is how it starts...u puch on a lever and it winds up...then pull the brake lever and it start) and nothing happened. AHHHH I REALLY NEED HELP. First of all...it's my first and only moped and im obsessed with it....i payed 400 for it...still got low miles only 2400...and also...if my dad finds out its broken hell kick my ass!! so someone PLEASE help me asap!! thank you, Ross.

I've heard of doing that before....but I have no knowledge of that kind of stuff. I do go to a trade school though...sadly its for electrical and not automotive...but theres ways in my school i can weld stuff...we can braze...spot weld...soder....and that crap. Im just afraid that when i was cutting it i would cut the wrong place or something and have it messed up for ever. Is there really a certain place to cut...cant i just take a saw and cut right down the middle....take everything out and braze it back togehter? Also...whats the heat shield? is that in the muffler or just that thing that covers it?

Hey guys, I am havinv a bit of a problem with my Aero 80 that I just picked up from the Junkyard. The bike doesn't have a battery or a spark plug cap. And Im not too sure which wires would be going to the spark plug cap. There are 2 large wires coming out of the loom. Both with small ends that seem to need to be crimped over other wires. There are 2 more wires that are a bit smaller that go to some sort of moter maybe? Im not sure. It is a small cylindrical object that also has 3 more wires, the smallest coming off of it that are permanently affixed to it. But the other 2 wires connected to it can be pulled off. Other than that there is a ground wire bolted to the frame. Would the 2 biggest free wires be to the battery or to the spark plug cap? And what color should they be just to be sure . . Anyone with wiring Diagrams or anything? Once I get this I am positive I can get the bike to run, but so far I have hit a wall and Im stuck. Also, the bike needs some plastic, any idea where I could get that? N.O.S. parts even?
Thanks - Andrew

Hi, today I took apart my 78 honda express to repaint it. I decided at the last minute to paint it silver. I bought all dupli-color paint, and put the priimer on some of the bike tonight, and will finish up tommorow, as soon as I can get the engine off. I figured out an easy way to disconnect the frame from the engine, it’s only 2 big bolts, which I unscrewed, and the engine came right off, but it’s still connected because of the brake wire. I cant figure out how to disconnect the brake wire, so until I do, Only the fenders and engine covers will remain painted lol. Please…anyone who has an express, tell me how to disconect the rear brake cable. Thanks, Ross.

Look at the wheel hub and the brake itself. You will see the cable nut on the end of the cable. Put small wrench or a vise grip just before the nut, being careful not to clamp it on the cable itself and remove the nut. You don't want fray the cable or twist it more than one turn removing or replacing the nut.

Hi, I’m looking for a 1978 honda express shop/repair manual. Please, if you have one, email me at iamgod015@aol.com. I’m willing to spend up to about $15. Thanks, Ross.

if your looking for a repair manual, go to ebay. I bought one for my NA 50 a few weeks ago. You might have to pay a little more than $15.00 but its worth it. good luck. Wilson

Hello, I recently purchased a 1980 honda express II. I dont know alot about it. could someone please tell me what is the best oil to use in it, and the brand name of the oil. Thanks. Wilson M.

...........then AMSOIL in the injector oil tank would be about the best. However any good quality 2-stroke oil made for injection will be okay.
If you mean oil for the tranny, any quality motor oil will do. don-ohio (:^)

ive been atempting to reweld my muffler twice now, and last night it broke again. seems the old rusty metal doesnt like to stick to the new header. has anyone tried to make a custom muffler from scratch or am i better with a new one? they seem to be pretty spendy for somthing that would be close to fitting my nx50m

Hi Whiz,
I make a flange out of 3/16" flat stock. You can cut it out with a hack saw and weld pipe to it. If you have to make bends in the pipe cut a 'V' where you want it to bend. Keep cutting 'V's while it is bolted in place so you can contour it to you ped. Weld all the 'V's when it's just right If you have a MIG it's pretty easy. I built a stainless steel exhaust for my car this way. I even copied the mufflers by cutting the old ones apart.

should i just buy a biturbo or promo? is the power increase worth it? i imagine this being an effective mod as i imediatly felt more power for the hour or so my stock muffler was repaired, as i was running it with none for a few months. mostly, im looking for cheap and dependable. im going to start commuting on this when it warms up here in Seattle. ive had the muffler fall off thrice while rideing so far, and it doesnt make it easy.

most inovations come from doityourself , but the real question is..
do you have the experince and the materials do to the job..
me, I will do something myself when I 'know' i can do it and not worry about it being right..
but if it's critical and i have the money ,I'll pay to have it right ..
I have learned to do things, I would rather pay somebody else for simply because , I had too. i didn't have the money to buy it or pay somebody to fix it and i simply had to have it working/ running/ not leaking/ or whatever..
don't get me wrong, i love working on these little bikes, but i love riding them more than working on them, and i hate like hell removing 19.5 inch tires on my RV..and doing the brakes..
i'll pay somebody else to do those brakes, when i have the cash. and i wish i knew how to rebuild automatic transmissions.. mine cost me $1200..but i can't
if you have materials on hand, I'm sure you can copy or design some kind of exhaust..
but the biturbo is tuned, adds power, looks great, and it's not expensive when compared to what some scooter exhausts cost..

I'd say I'm about the same Whiz.
I hate climbing under my car but I'll do the plugs.
If I can make it a lot cheaper with not to much effort I'll do it. Sometimes it's just easier and cheaper in the long run to go buy it but often I don't have the bucks so I have to make it.

I agree with THW, to some point. Some day`s it is difficult for me to do work on car`s, getting down to replace the brakes or under the car to service the Trans. and then getting back up is the hard part, sometimes I need a hoist to get me back on my feet. But when it comes to Mopeds, nothing can keep me away from them, I love to fabricate parts and working with metal. I have a Honda Elite, that had no muffler and the dealer wanted $110.00 for a new one, I had no money for it, so I made one, using the stock pipe and a muffler from a Toro snow thrower,I welded the pipe to the muffler and then I drilled 4 small holes in it, and then installed it, "oh" man the ped is quick and fast.
