1963 Honda C100 carb hookup

by (no login)

Just a quick question about the fuel line and carb hookup's on my 63'-64' CA100 i am restoring. The bike had no carb on it when i got it. The tank has two nipples on it and the carb has 3, i can get it to run by attaching the tanks lower nipple output to the fuel petcock and capping the other line on the tank, i used the bottom nipple on the carb as a vent, running a line to the ground, i also capped the third central nipple on the carb. Please help!! I want to make sure everthing is properly vented.

your fuel selector vlave is on the carb, right ?

those two nipples are on the valve body ,main and reserve

the two nipples on the tank are main supply and reserve fuel

so one of those is clogged up..

when the scoot came from the factory, there was/is two hoses from the tank to the the fuel valve

IF i assume the 3rd carb nipple is on the carb body ...and down low, that would be to drain the carb for cleaning / and or storing the scooter.

RE: Carb problems

by (no login)

the top nipple on the carb is the fuel on/off, so am i supposed to hook both lines of the tank to that single nipple?, the other two nipples on the carb are smaller diameter than the main incoming fuel nipple, one is very low and one is just below the main fuel on/off, i'm not understanding the point of a reserve if they both go into the same nipple.
Thanks again!
Please if you have a CA100 or access to one if you could tell me exactly what is connected to what?

Re: RE: Carb problems

Moped Gurus

if you were to take the fuel valve apart,

you would see that it slects either-or..

both fuel lines goto seperate nipples..

the reserve tank nipple is lower than the main tank nipple inside the gastank..

when the gas level in the tank is too LOW to go in the main gas line some still goes in the reserve line

the fuel valve picks which which one the carb is going to run on..

the bottom one on the carb is the DRAIN.. you have to open the drain screw for anything to come out..

as far as bigger or smaller, i don't remeber which one is main or reserve..
BUT 2 hose , 2 nipples, 2 tank fittings, it's one on one.. NOT 2 on one

just got a 77 express

by (Login Pacs_Legend)
Moped Riders

i just purchased a 77 express with about 1200 miles on it, the guy said it hasnt been started for 10 years, i got a new battery already. the first time i tried starting it, i turned the gas on, and a whole bunch leaked out then stopped, i think it came out the bottom of the air cleaner, so i took the air cleaner cover off and there was no air filter element, where can i get one, or can i use something else? also on the air cleaner cover, is there supposed to be some sort of gasket on it? if so where can i get one of them too? another thing, i didnt see a fuel filter anywhere is that bad? the main thing is i cant get it started it sounds like it wants to, but never fires all the way up, i dont think i should try starting it anymore until i get that air cleaner element, but what other things can i do to try to to get it to start?

clean out the carb... i mean totally take it a part. get some carb cleaner and douche it. Replace all parts.

make sure you remember how many turns the air mixture screws are set at.

i would also clean out the tank

fill the oil tank with 2 stroke

i dont even run an air filter on mine...i just make sure the cover is on

get a new plug also

OK no fuelin the carb,

clogged fuel valve ?

remove hose turn on valve does gas come out
fast ? slow?
fast valve and tank ok.. slow loosen gas cap ( they are vented )

still slow ,valve clogged

step2

put hose on valve remove at carb

good gas flow.. hose ok..
no gas, replace hose

step 3.

hose ok, the carb inlet is clogged

remove and carefully diss-assemble carb

cleanwith carb spray and compresed air. give extra attenion to the inlet port and the carb float needel seat. if clogged or stuck the carb won't get any gas.

while your at it make sure the oil injection nipple is clear.

try this

by (Login themopedwhiz)
Moped Gurus

open the screw on the bottom of the carb, see if you actually have gas in the carb float bowl..

yes, then the jetting is still clogged up.

no then the fuel inlet/needle seat is clogged up

also try this, take the exhaust off the exprress or at least loosen it up enough so that it is loose at the cylinder exhaust port..

now try to start it.

if it won't run it's the carb..

if it does run, loose but not tight, then the exhaust is plugged up..

and you will need to clean it or replace it.

rebuilt headlight

by (Login alec63)
Moped Riders

I rebuilt the headlight on my 77 Express per your advise, but light is not focused. Apparently the bulb needs to be at the focal point of the lens to direct light in the right direction. I cut the old bulb off right at the indented ring (about 1/16 inch from back edge) and inserted an automotive halogen bulb. Does anyone know where the focal point is for the headlight lens? I need to figure out if I need the filament further in or out.

1978 express transmission reassembly

by (no login)

I've recently broken my main spring for the starting mechanism on my '78 express. I have 3 expresses, 2 complete and 1 mostly there, so I have plenty of replacement parts. The problem is that whenever I replace the tranny cover, I'm not setting everything right because the wind-up lever won't return to the right position. If anyone has any pointers please help! I'm a professional mechanic with plenty of skills, but this is getting really aggrivating! Thanks!

tranny assembly

by (Login themopedwhiz)
Moped Gurus

i'll try to explain it..

start by making sure the rear brake cable is loosen up or removed so that the release arm is free..
( you want to be able to engage it easily ) to lock the mechinism when needed

when putting the starter gearing togethere there are puch marks on the spline shaft and the ratcheting gear that need to be lined up during assembly

holding the main/gear so that the two ears/stoppers are at about 8 o'clock and 10 o'clock
assemble shaft gears and springs.. remember the punch marks they should be togethere and at 12/noon

when you put this assembly into the tranny/chain mech..
the ears/stops should be just above or against the rubber stopper.. ( with the case in front of you stopper on your left ears positioned about 11 and 1 ..although it will likely be 9 an 12 because of spring tension pushing one ear against rubber stopper .OK )

I know is is reverse from the remove/install position, but it's pictured this way in the manual.
when your done putting everthing in the cover/case flip it around and putit on the bike.

put in the starter release arm and the locking arm..make sure the gearing is locked/engaged

now use the wind up leaver to wind the gear & spring just enough to move the big gear and lock it away from the stopper..there is a punch mark on the main gear it should align with the starter lever, with the lever in the gear teeth

turn the cover around to the correct postion

you can now place the cover and starter back on the engine..

if needed rotate/turn the flywheel counter-clockwise toward the left/rear of engine to align the crank shaft to he splines on the main gear.

I hope this helps..

Yamaha SH50 (riva/razz) running issue

by (no login)

HI! I have a Yamaha SH50 (Says Riva on the front, I believe it says Razz on side panel, it's under a cover b/c of snow). Anyway, thanks to help from everyone here, I cleaned the carbs, pushed wire through the jets and got her running. The battery is presumably completely dead (it sat for years without so much as being started). The engine w/ choke will run and she warms up. once underway, she's fine but pulling to a stop, she'll get really low on the RPMs and the lights go dim. I have to fuss w/ the throttle and choke (adding just a little little "hair" of choke) and she'll continue but sometimes she'll just cut out completely and I'll have to kick her starter a couple of times to get her going again (note, generally she doesn't re-start on the first kick but don't know if it's the *$#&*$ cold or something else). Any suggestions as to what it could be? I'd like some specific ideas before I pull out all the plastics again so I can go straight to the general area of the problem. (Or could it be the battery? I never bothered to get a new one as I thought the battery was only good for the starter and powering turn signals at idle). Incidentally, the turn signals just stay on with a "spastic" pulse at a stop but blink fine on full throttle.

Thanks in advance !!!!!

John

Hard ... warm start is classic symptom of Varnish

by (Login themopedwhiz)
Moped Gurus

varnish ( petro-residue ) builds up in the crankcase..

when the engine warms up this stuff becomes like a sponge.. ( my anology ) any the gummy mess grabs the fuel coming thru the intake and cause hard starting..

the fix is to run a can or 2 of carb spray thru the engine...

you remove the plastic's and the airbox and filter..
warm up the engine, with the scoot on the center stand you play with the throttle to keep the motor running while giving it carb spray directly into the carb.

do this for a minute or two. then ride the scoot around the block to air cool the motor, park on the stand again and spray some more...

Repeat untill the can is empty, ythe idea is warm the engine up good, but NOT over heat it.. rdiding around the block cools it back down to noraml temps..

if you sat in the driveway untill you emptied the can you could fry the motor..

DO NOT shut off the engine..

repeat process untill the can is empty then take a nice ride of several miles..

now you can re-adjust the carb for best running ( if needed )

get a battery your lights are going to keep acting weak untill you do..

the altenator/magneto does not put out enough power at idle speed.. to have good lights or signals

does the carb-cleaner damage the cylinder? /premix ratio

by (no login)

My wife has a 1981 Honda Express SR 2 stroke 49cc. Has the same type of probs as the Razz - runs good when cold then peters out as it warms up. Is hard to start when warm, and can only be started after several hard kicks with the throttle wide open. It actually runs better in the cold. I've cleaned out the carb (really well, twice), put in a new air filter and plug, it has a nice strong blue spark, and all the vacuum and fuel lines seem to be intact.

The varnish issue sounds like what's going on here, but I'm new to 2-strokes and was wondering if the carb cleaner would cause oil breakdown in the cylinder and lead to scoring. Can I just crack open the crankcase and clean it out while it's not running?

Second, does anyone know what the ideal premix fuel/oil ratio should be for this bike, stock everything except foam air filter, with the oil injector bypassed?

Thanks!

I am moving overseas and have a 1969 Honda CT90 K1b Trail 90 parts bike (approx 40% left, completely disassembled) that is free to a good home if picked up. There is not enough here to be put back together into a whole bike, just parts for one that you've got already. E-mail me directly at hayesp@uthscsa.edu if you need further info/parts list/description/pics on this. Also selling a 1975 Honda GL1000 cheap.

Premix ratio 25:1 / aprox 5oz oil 1 gallon gas

by (Login themopedwhiz)
Moped Gurus

the carb spray procedure is safe, when done correctly..

i have done it many times..

yes you can crack the case..

but remember 2 strokes suck and push fuel thru the crankcase..you have to maintain vaccum integry or the bike will run worse than it does now.

you will likely need new case gasket and new oil seals at the crank shaft bearings in the case sides ,along with cylinder base and head gasket,

the cost of these parts add up fast,
basicly you will be tearing the whole engine apart so you can clean the inside of the case halves.

Funniest ever!

by (no login)

ok ok now this is my alltime low story....
lower than my express slowly sputtering to a stop in front of a few beautiful women....haha
i lazed around all yesterday morning till about 430 when i decided to take our kitten to the park...
we have a small apartment and we arent even aloud to have this kitten in our appartment but we do just to have some release or entertainment...
so i take the cat to the park (in a backpack) on my express...
the i head to sears (where my fiance works {she lives with me}) to let pete (our kitten) say hi to sarha (my fiance)....
so after that i head home wich is like maybe 10 blocks away
and i get half way and i see blinking lights on the signs in front of me so i turn around and a cop is fallowing me with his lights blaring then he chirps his siren and tells me to hang a right at a side street....
he gets out and lets me know that i am breaking the law for not having eye protection on....
so he takes my ID back to his car and finds out that i have a revoked licence...
i got it revoke for not paying a ticket for not having insurance on my car (i couldnt afford it) isnt that ironic?
so thats why i have a moped ... revoked licence
so anyways he comes back from his car as im watching people drive by and stare at me on my moped being pulled over by a police officer
so he comes up and is like well i hafto take you in because of your licence being revoked....
i tell him that i looked up on the internet for the drivers manual and it says anyone can drive a moped that is 15 and that has passed the eye exam for a drivers licence (ce or se sp?) wich i had so i thought i was being a good little boy... i gues not..
so he tells me he hasto handcuff me and i let him know that theres a kitten in my backpack ..
it turns out he has had bad experiences with cats when was young... but he was really nice as with all the other officers i encountered...
anyways he take me back to my appartment to drop off the cat the down to the jail....
the cat was all over the officers dash because he ahd excaped from the backpack
i told the officer to put the kittne in the truck so he could concintrate on driving but i gues the shotgun in the trunk and my kitten didnt make a good recipe in the officers mind...
soi go through all that jail / finger prints / correctional officers / bond and bailing out routine.... it cost me 250 freaking dollars all because the officer didnt know the moped laws in kansas...
so my court date is the 27th and i plan to print off the handbook page that says i can drive with a revoked licence....
all that happened (3 hours of jailtime) while my fiance was at work....
the short moral of the story...
WEAR YOUR SHADES ! ! ! ! ! ! !
(by the way i got outside my appartment before i even left and i noticed that it was really bright out so i was like ... hey i need to have my sunglasses... but i remembered that they were in sarahs car so i was like... well i gues ill managed... i never signed up for getting arrested for it!)
the long moral of the story....
IF YOURE REALLY POOR THE GOVERNMENT CRAPS ON YOU....
I WAS TOO POOR TO HAVE INSURANCE ON MY CAR BUT I STILL HAD TO GET TO WORK SO I COULD MAKE WHAT LITTLE MONEY I MADE... I GET REAR ENDED SO MY BACK BLINKER IS OUT ... SO I GET PULLED OVER FOR NOT HAVING A BLINKER.... THEN HE SEES ME HAVING NO INSURANCE AND GIVES ME A TICKET WICH I COULDNT PAY FOR SO I GET ARESTED FOR NOT PAYING IT... THEN I GET A MOPED AND TRY TO BE GOOD BUT THAT JUST GETS ME ARRESTED....
im freaking writing the presedent....
good luck...

Funniest Ever... NOT

Moped Riders

Jessie,
I feel your pain. I hope the judge see's the stupidity of the officers conduct and you get your $250 back. I live in Illinois and most police officers don't know the law regarding mopeds. Here we have to licence the moped and have it insured. Give me a break. It only goes 30mph tops. I can go that fast on a bike. Yet a kid can ride one of those motorized sit down skate boards on the sidewalk and the cops look a different way.

As far as these Mopeds being chick magnets I would say not. The only attention I get when I ride is from little boys. Maybe MJ should get one.

At any rate they are a blast to cruise around town in. I will remember the eye protection. Good luck.

I don't believe Puch put governors on their peds.
I did notice mine ran as though it was regulated when the choke was not fully closed after warm up.

problems keeping 86 honda spree running (oil/gas) !!HELP!!

by (no login)

curently, my moped doesnt run at all. the engine doesnt turn over. when i try to start it, i can just hear the starter trying to turn it over. The battery has been keeping a charge, and im thinking that the problem might partly be because of the wiring. along with this, the spark plug is covered in black stuff. I am thinking is because of the carb letting in too much oil or something like that. i would like to re-wire the whole thing, and also fix the oil/gas problem (if any). Please email me or post any suggestions or tips on how to get it working to its top preformace.

starter spins... engine doesn't ?

by (Login themopedwhiz)
Moped Gurus

thats not wiring, that's the starter not engaging the ring gear on the crankshaft

also remove the plug, and try spinning it to see if the piston is moving..

replace the sparkplug with a new one, and check for spark..

old oil residue from the crankcase is coating/fouling the current plug , it's not going to spark while in that condition..

once you get it running make sure you drain the oil tank and put in new ( motorcycle injector oil ) NOT weed wacker oil..

the ignition won't spark if the engine doesn't spin.. the crankshaft has to turn to make the CDI fire.

kik starter

by (Login themopedwhiz)
Moped Gurus

I could be mistaken, but i think the 86 has a kick starter, are you sure about the year ?

a kick starter , engages differntly than the electric start and should work even if the electric start doesn't engage.

Try this..

by (Login tedtuner)
Moped Riders

Apply WD-40 to the screws on the brass cover. Let it sit for 15 minutes and try to get the Point cover off.

Also try using a new spark plug.

change the rollers in the variator

by (Login themopedwhiz)
Moped Gurus

do the same things to this scoot ,that i and others have done to the NU50..

modifing or changing the rollers in the front variable drive pelley changes the tranny response..

mod the exhaust.

put on a big bore kit, ( becareful of clearing the body plastic .... engine heat )

Re: change the rollers in the variator

by (no login)

does that mean drilling the rollers? and is balance important to it? i would imagine it would be hard to keep it balanced. tho i havent torn apart my scoot yet. waiting for dry weather. thanks

drilling is to much work .. replace them

by (Login themopedwhiz)
Moped Gurus

scooter shops like VT cycles http//www.vtcycles.com

and other places sell replacements with various rollars of different weight

Ihave used these sets and when i didn't have any available I simply remove 2 weights from the variator.

all express variators have 6 weights

so by removing 2 and leaving 4 ( in a balanced 'X' pattern ) i reduced the weight by 1/3

some scoots only have 4 weights in the variator and this means replacing them to get those variators to work correctly .

I notice my 78 Express smokes a lot. I haven't dug into it yet, has anyone figured out why the Expresses have that tendency? My other peds don't smoke.
Thanks,

it is likely excess/old oil in the muffler

by (Login themopedwhiz)
Moped Gurus

drain the oil tank and put in new oil ( motor cycle Injector oil ) NOT weed wacker oil..

then ride , ride ride.. the old residue will burn away and the new oil burns cleaner..

Thanks Whiz

by (Login RobDD)

I'll give it a try. My other peds don't seem to have this build up problem. This ped only has 200 miles on it. The man I bought it from only used to go to the mail box so it's possible the muffler is full of old weed wacker oil.
I always use good oil in my peds and the oil was changed when I purchased it.

Moped License

by (no login)

Do Tomos moped require a Calif. M-2 license. I am getting conflicting reports. One says all you need is a Class C Calif license to ride one. Thanks.
