while still being new to this group, ive noticed that i get a ton of pop up ads everytime i open the page. and most of these ads are supported by GAIN which is a big spyware company. how can i eliminate these ads? i know they are there to help pay for maintaining the site, but i spend more time deleteing these ads to find out that there wasnt a new post since my last visit. all of my security settings are on medium and im useing e-trust as a virus scanner and adaware to locate spyware installed on my hard drive. this is totally frustrateing.

I find that my fuel gauge response lags quite a bit. If I add gasoline, it could take up to half an hour to respond. If it didn't respond at all, I would assume it was a broken electrical connection, but this confuses me. Any ideas, or is this type of performance typical for an '86 Spree? thanks.

Gauges work by several systems. Usually there is a resistor that changes as a rod moves up and down it. Take the gauge out and check that it moves up and down freely and the wiper is making good connection on the resistance wire.

Ok i started out with an 84 iowa spree that was in storage for a year. I put fresh gas and injector oil in. It went 22mph. I put on a K&N cone filter like the v8 breather caps. It still only went 22mph after getting the honda shop to drill out the main to what they said is a 75.
Then i got a normal spree muffler, 27mph still, I drilled it and found that even with a long drill bit there was nothing up the nipple, then i drilled at 8 o'clock. still 27mph with a drilled muffler and K&N cone air filter size 75 main, and I dropped the clip on the needle.
It goes 25-26mph at half throttle, from half to full I only get about 1mph gain.
Doesnt the spree stock go 30mph? What could cause mine to not go any faster?
Posted on Nov 10, 2003, 11:14 AM from IP address 204.134.206.57
cut the nipple off the muffler, then make the hole bigger..3/4 inch
you may weld a new bigger nipple on if you wish
#2 get a new drive belt..
the width/thickness of the drive belt is critcal.. a worn belt rides lower in the pullies, a new belt rides higher in the pullies increasing top speed.

If Im replacing the drive belt I might as well do the pulley mod right?
I have some of what to do saved. What Im not clear on is what belt to get cause it says to get one at autozone. I wasnt clear on wheather or not to get a l inch longer belt or 1 inch wider belt to help reduce the loss of acceleration. Anyone have a part Number on a belt to get? Id just like the spree togo 40mph so Im not gonna max out the pulley ratio for all topend.
Also I looked at my drive belt and its ribbed... Is it suppose to be? There is TONS of black powder from the belt in there. Seems like the belt should be smooth?
Thanks a lot!
Posted on Nov 10, 2003, 11:17 PM from IP address 24.117.22.123
Im not sure how to get the right belt size... Mine is broken so I cant do the messurements to get the new belt size.
Also Im not clear on where to place the washers when doing the mod. I saw that brian said that two washers gave him about 38mph and stil had acceleration. So how much do I shave off the pulley and where do I put the washers? He said you add Half the amount you shave off one place and the other half in another place... but where are these two spots? And how much do i shave off for two washers? Im not clear on if he means two washers total or two washers on each place you put them? Im not too clear am I? haha Im sure those who have done it know what i mean.
Posted on Nov 11, 2003, 7:40 PM from IP address 24.117.22.123
the lip is on the inside half and it is on the belt side ( inside the pulley ) it keeps the two halves a set distance apart..
when you remove material from this lip the pulley halves come closer togethere , this makes the belt ride higher making top speed faster..
BUT because this is a fixed pulley size it reduces take off power ( acceleration is slower )
because you remove material the whole pulley moves closer to the motor and is now out of aligment with the rear pulley, ( the belt is tweaked sideways ) and rubs on the edges of the pulley , in 100 miles maybe less the belt would be torn all to he**..
so a washer the EXACT thickness of the amount removed must be placed on the shaft before the pulley halves are put back on the engine crank shaft so the the center line of the pulleys stays the same.
brian took off the whole lip ( 30 thou ? ) then bought 2 washers 15 thou ?
he put one on the shaft then one inbetween the 2 pulley halves ( new removable lip / spacer )
by putting both between the halves he was back to a stock spree
one behind and one in between was 1st stage mod
two behind and none inbetween was 2nd stage mod
stock setting needed a stock belt
stage one and stage two used a longer belt..
measure the thicknes of the lip buy your washers to total this thickness, BEFORE you grind/mill it off.

Thanks i get it. but how tight should the new belt be?
by
(no login)
That makes it perfectly clear... But how tight should the new belt be? I think Im just gonna do stage 1. I guessing Ill have to buy one see if it works or replace it with another if it doesnt, but since I dont know how a new belt on a stock spree fits Im not sure how tight this one should be. It seemed like the old one could be squeezed in the middle and it will get loose until I spun the pulleys and it would tighten up. Is that what my new longer belt should do after the mod?
Thanks a lot! If I'll Try to get pics of this mod for others to see.

would a warn down clutch cause a loss in top speed?
If so Ive found a used one for sale. Theres two things i wonder about so i put at pic of it up at http://www.boisepcrepair.com/scooter/clutch.jpg
This one like mine has what looks like pieces of the pads broken off shown circled in the pic. See hows theres the red stains there, it looks like that was glue holding one what was clutch pad but is now broke off? Mine looks the same on all three pads. The edges of the pads look all jagged like they were broke off from wear.
Am i wrong about this? Is that just how they look?
The second thing i dont know is does this clutch have much life left in it? These pads look like they have more than mine but is it an acceptable amount?
Thanks guys!

I'm not sure which mod boosted you from 22 to 27mph. Was it the K&N, the re-jetting, or the muffler? You said it 'still only went 27mph' when previously you reported it going only 22mph.
I'm considering doing the K&N thing, and I'm wondering what kind of boost to expect. Is it worth the time/effort? thanks.
p.s. A lot of black dust in the clutch cover would indicate a really worn drive belt. You should definitely replace it. Don't know any details about the pulley mod though, sorry.
Posted on Nov 11, 2003, 8:50 AM from IP address 65.49.71.65
Sorry i wasnt clear.
I had the iowa spree muffler, I added the K&N and nothing changed. I added the Normal spree muffler and went from 22 to 27mph with the K&N. I also then drilled the muffler and got no gains. but Im guessing I will see gains from both those mods when I get a belt. Maybe Ill need to clear the carb again too.

Anyone know if the part marked "fuel cock assy 1" (part # 2EK-24500-00-00) is the same as what others have called the "fuel pump?" Just looking into this as a potential source of starting problems. I to cleaned the carb out. I tried a "starting spray" and the engine runs off that but still does not seem to be getting fuel. Maybe it's in the lines?
Many Thanks in advance.

OK, I cleaned out the "cock assy" and blew out the lines. I cleaned the main jet but dont' actually recall getting to the main nozzle. Also, (please don't flame me on this), can the scoot start with the air cover off?
Thanks.

I don't want to buy a new battery (expensive) until I know that the starter works. I took it apart, cleaned it up and it looks fine. Can I just connect it to a 12V source? If not, what do I do? thanks.
Posted on Nov 9, 2003, 5:46 PM from IP address 65.49.71.65
Yep, Connect the battery ground to the starter body and the batery plus to the plus terminal on the starter. Watch out it can kick. Just touch it for a second.
Also make sure it's a 12 volt and not 6 volt starter (use the same battery voltage)

I have a 86 spree that has been sitting for a long time. I just got a petcock fuel for it cause the carb was not getting gas it seemed. The spree would only run if i kept spraying quick start fuel into it. I cleaned the carb and it did nothing..any ideas why the spree wont keep running??
Thanks

Take the carb all apart and clean the passage ways with carb cleaner and blow out with compressed air, remove the float bowl and clean it the same way, check the operation of the float and the float valve, if the float valve is sticking, the scooter will not run.

both the little round petcock filter ( inside the bottom of the petcock )
and the in tank filter should have been there..
the speedo mileage and missing filters , don't compute,
unlesss of couse the mileage is really 10,212 miles
here's a trick you can try..
remove the carb from the bike..
leave the intake manifold pipe in place..
remove the vaccum-choke hose from the base of theintake and cap the nipple with a rubber cap or tape..
spray carb cleaner or starting fluid into the intake.
and start the engine..
you should be able to keep the motor running with quick light sprays of fluid into the intake. ( little shots )
this is just a test..but if you can start the engine and keep it going .. all the problems are on the carb and fuel supply side.

I used one of the aftermarket k@n looking push in breathers for automotive valve covers. The base is rubber and the top is chrome. The original center hole is about a half inch, I cut the opening to about one inch and it pushes right on . I put a screw clamp on the back just so it couldnt be knocked off. looks sharp too :)

I talked to Fabio of the VespaSupershop today and he is OK and the fires arround San Diego didn't come close to his home. He said they did suffer from the bad air and airborne ashes.
Fabio is working from home and still sorting things out from the move out of his shop. He gave me a new number for customers to call and leave a message for Vespa Moped parts orders.
If you call please leave a message and state the model and year of your Vespa moped. Be sure to leave your area code and call back number. Fabio will return your call for your parts order.
The new number is 619-298-3950

MopedWhiz? I still think he just has a clogged petcock, but can you give him specific directions on clearing it? I would've just cleaned the screen and shot carbspray back thru it,I think, while set to both positions.

Check the pipe on the carb where the fuel connects. I had a couple of Nu50s that had been setting for a long time and even though I removed and cleaned the carb I mised the inlet pipe. It was clogged with old varnish.
If you haven't removed the carb and cleaned it I suggest you do this. There are two jets to clean, the main and next to it is a idle jet or pilot jet.
Here is a link to an exploded view of the carb http://www.powersportspro.com/partsfish/v2/displayfiche.asp
If you try to start it and it starts and runs in may be the Autobystarter (automatic choke) You may have to disconnect it and plug the holes.
Posted on Nov 7, 2003, 7:44 PM from IP address 12.240.69.42
do what moped whiz said to do. your petcock is clogged somewhere. clean the screens and run wire thru it to push out any debris. its a really simple part to clean and you have something plugging it up somewhere.

HI all! I have a 1985 honda spree. I bought it off a friend. After being put into storage for 8 years, I put some fresh gas in it and it fired right up!
But somehow the muffler was clogged....How could this happen?
I squirted a hose into itand it worked fine after, but I was wondering what could cause that kind of buildup?
Also....How do I adjust the Idle? I thoroughly went through the carburator, and I find there are no adjustments.
I am afraid to take apart the grip throttle handle, as there are 3 switches attached to it....
Any ideas? Thanks!
Pete the Newbie
Posted on Nov 7, 2003, 3:39 PM from IP address 68.9.253.49
Carbon buildup from the exhaust is what clogs the muffler. I don't think squirting water inside will be a very effective solution. Usually you have to cut it open, clean it out, and weld it back together.
Also, there are two adjustment screws on the carburetor. The one on top should be turned CW to increase idle speed. The throttle grip has very little to do with this (unless it's stuck or the cable is too loose/tight etc.). I think you're better off finding the screws on the carb. By the way, the lower screw is the idle adjustment ratio screw. It should be approx. 1.5 to 2 turns out.
Posted on Nov 9, 2003, 12:09 PM from IP address 65.49.71.65
the oil and carbon get hard over the years of setting
my favorite way to clean the exhaust is to soak it in safety solvent, drain it, blow it out backwards ( air into the tail pipe ) with compressed air, put it backon the scoot and ride it untill the white smoke stops
the other way is buid a fire in your barbecue, wood or charcoal ,No gas.. then roast the muffler for a few hours to bake the crud loose.
shake and blow out as much as possible.. then mount it andride the scoot.. ( ALLOW TO COOL BEFORE HANDLING )

Hi guys, I'm having issues with my 82 urban express. I've tried almost everything and am at my wit's end. I need some help. I can always get the 'ped started, but it always cuts out after a few seconds. I've cleaned out the carb and it checks out. I disconnected the autochoke and the same thing happened. I even ran a premix to the same result. It sounds like it's flooding, but how do I fix it?! Am I possibly over tightening the screw that holds the float?
Posted on Nov 7, 2003, 1:29 PM from IP address 152.163.253.1
the screw holds the pin that acts like a hinge pin for the float.. i have never seen one over tighten but anything is possible..
check the inlet port where the gascomes into the carb..
make sure it isn't restricted with varnish.. check the fuel petcock to make sure fuel is flowing into the carb. and check the needle seat (tiny port/hole) where the float needle point lets the gas into the carb
