Motobecane 125, 175 cc

by (no login)

Hi, does anyone know if 1950's 125cc and 175cc Motobecane motorcyles were ever sold in the States? In the 50's they have OHV engines with 4 speed; the older ones had a flathead with 3 speed on the tank. Thanks

by (Login don-ohio)
Moped Gurus

........someone here or at www.mopedriders.com might know.
I didn't think they sold them here, but a LOT of MBK mopeds were sold here, and I own one and owned another previously.
Mopeds,of course, in the States are limited to 50cc engines and usually below 2 HP or a speed rating of 20-30 MPH or both.
I hope MBK motorcycles weren't/aren't as hard to work on as MBK mopeds from France. don-ohio (:^D

update on the 80 express.....

by (no login)

well i spent today recleaning the carb... this time i used a q-tip and some toothpaste and cleaned the needle seat. i also used a pipe cleaner to claen all holes. i made sure it was all shinny inside and out. well low and behold when i put it back togather she started right up... well surprised as i was i let it warm up as i put the airbreater on thought i would take it for a ride to let it warm up good to adjust the carb. rode it a mile or so and it ran great. way much better than it has ran since i been fooling with it. it runs around 25 to 28 mph. not sluggish no spitting or sputtering runs stright out full throtel. (did not have to adjust.) i love it and hope it last. thanks to don for all your help i could not have done it with out your help. my the moped GOD bless you in all you do.

I guess I may be the only one moderating right now? I need to contact George (The Whiz)and see what's up.

Buddy, thanks for the well wishes and glad she's runnin' well! If we stick with it we can fix it almost every time.
That's what you did, and now it's a great running Express.
I've been pouring concrete in Florida and then up here in Ohio, and I totally forgot my moderating duties here for a while.
I hope everyone that can, gets out there and mopeds ON!

Charging the battery

by (no login)

all of a sudden my blinkers are blinking slow or not at all, after i ride for a while they will blink until i apply the brake. Do you have to chargr the battery w/a charger or dose the moped keep it charged? or do you have to buy a new battery every few months?

also, i started useing premix, it seems to run much better now. however, i dont seem to get the same mpg is this right? remeber im new.

by the way it still runs great! so i do not want to make to many changes. i ride it daily about 5 to 15 miles.

thanks

Battery may be weak.

by (Login don-ohio)
Moped Gurus

Or the moped may not be charging like it should. You won't get much charge with short trips if you use the brake and turn signals a lot.
Check the connection of the battery terminals to the cables and check to see that the wiring is tight at the rectifier.
No,you do not have to buy a new battery very often.
When you started running pre-mix,did you disconnect the oil pump and block the injection line?
Run 35:1 or so of really good quality 2-stroke oil when you premix it.
Have fun riding,Buddy! don-ohio (:^D

Head light bulb

by 82express (no login)

Does anyone know the part number of the bulb in the head light for a 82 nc-50. All I see on the bulb is 6 volt 25 watt. Parts fish doesnt break it down to the light bulb. I do believe they are selling the lense. $31.67 for a bulb seems expensive.

Thanks Steve

Express headlight

by (Login don-ohio)
Moped Gurus

The expresses I've seen have a sealed beam headlight.Yes,expensive. There is a mod listed on this site to make it so you can replace just the bulb.
Try calling Handy Bikes at 1-614-299-0550 and ask if Bob Jones (BJ) has any headlights that would fit. He's not there on Thursdays, though.Give him the outside dimensions of the sealed beam.
As long as you stay below 35 watts and above 18 watts, you can use either 6 volt or 12 volt, and you should be okay with any sealed beam that fits.
Handy Bikes ships fast and their price isn't outrageous.
NOTE!: People blow these bulbs all the time because they have no battery,or the battery shorts out. You must have a battery, even a dead one,or it will blow the headlight in short order. don-ohio (:^D

Bulb

by (Login 82Express)

I see that my father in law must of replaced the sealed beam at one time with one you can replace just the bulb. Ive been looking for a bulb and cant seem to find one, It has a flange on the bottom to hold it in place,. 6 volts duel filament 25 watt. The high beem still works but I figured I would start looking. I figure the bulb must of come out of a newer bike. All the wiring for the bulb holder just plugged right in to the existing wiring so it must of been a common upgrade.

Hmmmmmmmmm.....shouldn't be hard...............

by (Login don-ohio)
Moped Gurus

........to find it on a Yahoo search(should be numbers and brand name on the base). I used to have some favorite bulb places to look.
The base is the thing. The 12V bulb for a Tomos is hi-lo and has two tabs that position the bulb so it's not upside down, and then you slightly push in and turn it maybe a 1/16th turn to lock it in.
The 6 volt Puchs had a hi-lo on some,I think.
If you post a pic of the base, someone will ID it quick,I'd say.
I'm sure you can find that bulb, but remember, wattage is wattage,so a 25/25 12 volt should work okay, but maybe be a little dim at idle.don-ohio

Air Filter

by (Login 82Express)

Just got my 82 express back from the inlaws to run up and down to the mail box. It hadnt been started for a while , woulnt go full trottle so I spayed the carb with cleaner and found a little hose on the right side plugged . I guess it sucks air from the outside??? Seemed to fix it. I quess should put new oil in it since it sat for about 7 yrs. The airfilter element is deteriated so I took one out of a push mower and stuffed in there. Anyone know where I can get a replacement filter?? Or the material to make one??? I was the original buyer of the bike in 83. I only pd $428.00 for it right off the showroom floor. I see some for sale for more than that. This express takes me back to my high school days. Also are batteries available????? Its dead. I still have the original tires they are a little dry rotted though.

Thanks for any info

1980 express no power

by Matty (no login)

i have a 1980 honda express nc50. it sat over the winter and wouldnt start, so i pulled the carb and soaked it overnight in carb cleaner and tried to make sure that everything was cleaned out. If i open the drain on the bottom of the bowl, i get good flow. I can get it to start with the choke open and it will run at full throttle with the choke closed, but as soon as i put it off the stand and try to ride it, it bogs out. What is going on here? I have cleaned the carb like 5 times. Also, when on the stand, it will idle super fast. I have both adjuster screws at 1.5 turns. Is there anywhere I can get a new or good used carb. I have been burned twice this summer by carbs on Ebay. Thanks!

If you have the stock air filter on there........

by (Login don-ohio)

.....then you have an air inleakage probably at the cylinder base gasket or a loose carb or intake to cylinder.
Spray some carb. cleaner while it's running right after you start it,before it gets hot,and if the rpm changes, you've located the leak. don-ohio

Probably starving for fuel.

by (Login don-ohio)
Moped Gurus

The fuel bowl in the carb is probably not getting fuel fast enough. That means dirt somewhere from the outlet of the tank to and thru the needle valve.
I don't think Sprees had the stupid vacuum supplied pressure to the carb.? I hope not.
If that's the case it would be a vacuum problem.
Check for restriction of fuel flow is what I'd do. don-ohio (:^D

Clean those points!

by (Login don-ohio)
Moped Gurus

That is probably next to fuel issues in being the most common cause of moped/noped troubles.
Now,I got to thinking thast maybe your oil-injection isn't doing its job, so make sure the oil tank is full, and for the first start-up at least, you'd better pre-mix oil into the gas at 3 oz. per gallon of gas or even 4 oz.

Yeah....the dreaded spark plug.

by (Login don-ohio)
Moped Gurus

The bogging problem is probably not the points, Buddy. Usually it is caused by a restrictive exhaust or air filter restriction.
Don't run it with the air filter off(you can increase the air intake by enlarging the inlet some though).....just run it, and see how it does over some time. That's a little bike and engine, and you are a big guy....don't expect it to carry you like it does a child or light person.
Do you know how to do a plug chop? That will tell you if you're running lean or rich or just right.
Warm the bike up by riding it, and hold the throttle so the bike goes the fastest it will go on a nice straight stretch, preferably in front of your house, but anywhere will do.
Now you can't do this on a hand-shifted no-ped, but with an automatic like you have, after you've run it flat out for about a minute, hit the red kill switch and let it coast to a stop(preferably into your drivewayLOL!).
Now let it cool a little and then remove the spark plug. If it's whitish on the porcelain part around the center, you're running lean and might burn a piston.
If it's light tan to medium tan you are jetted perfectly.
If it's very dark or black, you are running rich and can open the air intake a little or downjet a number. don-ohio

looking good........

by buddy (no login)

things are looking good just a few more questions...

i have a very small amount of gas dripping from the overflow. could this be becouse of a bad carb float and jet not closing properly and allowing to much gas in the carb? also there seems to be gas sweet on the carb? also when riding the ped on ruff road it seems to run bad i am thinking that the float is not working properly and the ped runs ruff? when on smooth road the ped runs smooth and 25 to 27 mph. (this is good for me)oh and it runs best after it warms up. sometimes its takeoff is slow?

should i order carb parts?

oh and the earlyer post about running light. was a dumb question the tail light was not working and i had no idea that changing the bulb would give me a tail light. lol brake light was working but no tail light. im so new to this stuff. lol

Maybe timing way off?

by (Login don-ohio)
Moped Gurus

Take out the spark plug, bring the piston up to TOP-DEAD Center(TDC). Is the mark on the flywheel lined up to the TDC line? It's been so long since I worked on one, I can't remember the look of it.
The `F' or firing line should be about 20 degrees PAST the marker on the bike.....in other words, with the correct rotation direction, the `F' line should line up with the marker BEFORE the piston comes up to within a millimeter or two of the TDC position, AND the points should be opening when the `F' line aligns with the marker.
You can just take an induction timing light and hook it to another battery with the inductor wire clamped on the spark plug wire, and time it by marking the `F' line with bright chalk or crayon....like timing a car.
I had understood that the only way to SLIGHTLY change the timing on those was to change the gap of the points. They should gap at .014" (inches, not millimeters). Hope this helps. don-ohio

Storing my moped for winter

by (Login misshondaexpress79)

Hi I live in Canada and I need some advice on storing my 1979 Honda Express NC50 for winter....
Should I empty the gas tank or leave gas inside and use a fuel stabiliser?
I'm going to store in a non heated(and probably humid) basement, altought we do get extremely cold temperature here in the winter it doesn't go lower than 5°Celsius (sorry don't know in F°)in my basement....
Also should I put some oil on some parts or W40?
Thank you very much in advance!

Storing Express with no ethanol or alcohol in fuel

by (Login don-ohio)
Moped Gurus

(1) Make sure if possible you have a tankful of gas that has no ethanol or alcohol blended into it, as that would draw moisture from the air into the tank.

(2)Shut off the gas valve(petcock)and run the engine on the stand until it dies or you hear the engine start to rev from lack of fuel. That empties the carb and prevents gummy deposits from forming after evaporation from the float bowl.

(3)Fill it to almost full AFTER adding a little(the proper suggested amount) stabilizer. If the cap has a non-vent AND vent position, place the lever to non-vent,and the air space you left at the top of the tank will allow for temperature changes.

(4) Now don't forget in the springtime or when you use it again to set the vent lever to `vent'on the cap so gas can get to the carb.
(5) Oil all the cables, let some air out of the tires, and wax the bike painted surfaces and wheels down with a spray or paste wax.
(6) The oil in the tranny should be fine, unless it's time to change it. If it's time to change it,go ahead and do that so no oily acid action takes place during the months ahead.
That's all I can think of right now,but it's very important NOT to store the bike with ethanol blended gasoline, which I understand might be hard to avoid up north.
NOTE: There IS a way to remove the Ethanol from gasoline, but it takes care and you waste a little gas doing it.
(1)If the gas is only 10-15% ethanol or less, you take a clean,CLEAR jug(so you can see thru it), and put water in..... about one-fifth of the jug's volume. This will absorb the alcohol in the gas.

(2)THEN fill the jug with gas and you will actually see the reaction of the alcohol LEAVING the gasoline to become part of the water on the bottom.

(3) The IMPORTANT thing to do next after 10 minutes have elapsed or more, is to pour off the pure gasoline that is above the layer of water/alcohol mix on the bottom of the jug.
(4)You MUST NOT pour ANY of the solution from the bottom layer into the tank.
(5) NOW you have pure gasoline with onlky a residue of alcohol remaining.

Since refiners usually use the alcohol to raise the octane rating of their gasoline, I would recommend that you use premium grade gasoline to do this,so the resulting octane level will be high enough.
This won't work with gas that's mostly ethanol,like E-85. don-ohio (:^)

Urban Express Choke problem

by (no login)

The automatic choke on my 82' Urban Express does not appear to start the moped. I can manually choke the carb with my hand and it fires right away. I took apart the choke box and it looks ok but I'm not sure what I'm lookinf\g for. air screw setting is 2 1/4 turns out now.

Any advice on what to check for and how to repair? thanks.

When parts go bad you need to replace them. Try www.westernhillshonda.com to see if they have a part for you.
Or if it's vacuum operated, look for a bad hose. don-ohio

Stolen Moped Story

by (no login)

so i havnt been on this site in about 2 years but i had a funny story to tell yah

i used to ride my 3 expresses when my license was revoked
but since i got it back i have been riding my ninja 500 and have slowly sold 2 of them
the one that i kept sat for about a year and i only kept it cause i was too lazy to sell it
its a light blue 81 NC50
anyways i had gotten it to run on occasion when i felt like riding it but after the effort of cleaning the carb and such i lost intrest plus the pipe was clogged so it had terrable acceleration
anyways it was sitting in my appartment building lot and hadnt moved for a few months
i wanted to get it started again to teach my GF how to ride but it wouldnt start
after about another month and a half of it sitting there it dissapeared
my girlfriend saw it a few times on campus and after telling me about it several times she saw it again in our bar/ shopping district and confronted the girl
she said it was hers and that it was passed down from her grandpa
she drove off in it and i then filed the police report
it had been missing for about 2 weeks but it wasnt hard for me to let go since it had sat there for so long
but i figured since i still had a chance to get it back i might as well put SOME kind of effort into it
so the next day my GF saw the same girl riding it only this time it was GREEN!
apparently the girl panicked that night and paint brushed it an ugly dark green
(a terrable discrace to the original paint and decals which were in very decent shape)
so the next day the campus cops and the 2 of us staked the girl out
we knew exaclty what bike rack she parked it at on campus and found it sitting there
with title in hand the girl got out of class only to find 3 cops waiting for her
(you know how many midwest cops like to show up for the littelest things)
she once again told the hand-me-down story to the cops
they verified the VIN and was amazed at how calm and cool she was about her lie and getting caught
a court person told me she would for sure face at least 2 days in jail

Mopeds, scooters and gravel

by (no login)

I wanted a scooter but I live in a rural area where some of the roads I am on are gravel or dirt. I found out that scooters, particularly the kind I want- a smaller one, is not safe on gravel. The bigger scooters aren't an option as I am pretty short (5 ft) and don't feel comfortable on them. I was wondering if a moped would be an option?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Gravel is not moped-friendly

by (Login don-ohio)
Moped Gurus

Of course, there is no substitute for having 4 wheels under you on gravel and sand. It takes skill and care to negotiate gravel roads on 2-wheelers. I would guess that a heavier bike like a small, low built motorbike would be the best, although many people get skillful enough to ride mopeds and scoots on gravel.
Wear a full face helmet, leather gloves, and riding leather with tough shoes in case you tumble, though.
I SLOW way down on gravel and put my feet down close to the road for better balance when I have to ride on gravel.
Stay OFF the front brake when on loose stone or sand and especially on curves. The rear brake might skid some, but you can maintain balance as it slows.
I like to ride my moped really slow anyway, so it doesn't bother me to slow down.
I hope you get the right bike for you and have a lot of pleasure with it. RIDE SAFE! don-ohio (:^)

Thanks for the tips

by Pennyann (no login)

When spring rolls around I believe I will be looking for a moped. I certainly won't buy one unless I feel it is the right one. Not all of the roads are gravel, just some. I was on a motorcycle once with a friend driving & we took a tumble on gravel. Glad I was wearing a helmet. Got some bad boo boos though, so I know what it's like & I'll do my best to avoid it.

I think your tips will help me a lot. I don't particularly need to go very fast & I'm willing to be extra cautious until I hit the paved road.

Thanks

Why does my 79 honda express keep blowing oil out of the little rubber vent on the inside of the transmission? The rear tire and wheel is allways covered with black street dirt and I have to keep putting oil in the transmission.

I don't think so I fill it so it just comes up to the filler hole threads, also I fill it when it is not on the stand so it is level.

Joe, if you have a battery, it would work.

by (Login don-ohio)
Moped Gurus

BUT, a model `A' or similar car horn will draw a lot of amps compared to a moped horn, so you'd need to wire it as a separate circuit off the battery.
There are some nice horns available for 6 or 12 volt from places like J.C.Whitney and others. don-ohio (:^)
