I have had the moped for about two months now. It’s a 88 tomos A3, it runs great but for some reason lately it won’t climb hills and the top end speed is limited i am about 6'2" and weigh about 165 to bout 170.... i dont kno if this has anything to do with the problem but it also has a problem switching gears. When I am taking off from a dead stop the bike just revs up in first gear and wont change into second i haft to give it a jolt to get it to change gears idon’t know why but doesn’t sound good. My friends have some little go-ped thingies and they blow past me everywhere we ride. My tomos moped used to be able to burn them anywhere we went! But now it is so sluggish I don’t even want it anymore! If you have any suggestions that you think I should do please help me …….. I would REALLY appreciate it!!! Thank You! Kory, NC

If it has ignition points, they may need cleaned and reset to .016" inch. They can slow you bad when they go shut.
Pull the exhaust pipe and look up into the exhaust port. it may be partially blocked with carbon. This same carbon can plug the exhaust pipe too. It will limit the rpm so bad it doesn't want to shift gears. make sure your tranny fluid isn't OVERFILLED. Just fill it to the `level plug' on the side of the case.
ALWAYS replace your spark plug too. Don't go by how it looks. You could have a dirty main jet also in the carb., but try this other stuff first.Okay? don-ohio

It ran fine until it sat for a month. There is a small rusted-through hole between the oil and gas tank. I ran it after it sat for a month and it started off fine, but after about 3 miles, it started bogging down. It progressively got worse and got to where it would only idle. The carb is clean. The plug is dark, but clean, but the oil tank was empty when I got home and the gas looks very oily. Can too much oil in the gas cause my problem? Also having trouble joining, something to do with the Network54 account. Great site, I hope I can join.

Yes to much two cycle oil in the gas will cause it to bog down. Looks like you need to pick up a new gas/oil tank. I see those being sold on ebay all the time. Don't forget to drain the 2 cycle oil line at the carb after the new one is installed. It could be worse, you would have fried you engine if the oil didn't leak into the gas and instead leaked out somewhere else.

project urban .. my ped has the biturbo and has been the experimental ped..
project lady.. my other halfs ped has a proma lowboy pipe.. and a stock engine.. it runs from 33 to 38 mph depending air temp, humidity, level ground or grade tail wind , etc..
project urban has the metrakit and the biturbo..
the biturbo gives more tourqe for climbing hills. the SanFernado valley here where I live has lots of hills
tht's why i run the biturbo

So im looking for a replacement for my iowa muffler on an 84 spree. Ive found two and both are more of an oval... the mufflers Ive seen in any picture of a spree iowa or not is a circle like mine...
What is the difference in these oval and circle mufflers? Is one better than the other?
Posted on Oct 19, 2003, 12:06 PM from IP address 24.116.136.25
the oval seems to have a small expansion chamber and is more restrictive inside too maybe. I'm gonna just mod my iowa muffler to be like the normal ones, or maybe add to the expansion chamber more?!?

I bought an 84 iowa spree. flushed old gas, new plug, new injector oil in tank but didnt clear out all the hose of the old, old tranny oil still in.
Ok, So the bike seems to run ok but it is insanly slow on the start until about 15mph then it seems to accelerate faster. Then it tops out at 22mph. It is the iowa so i know the muffler is crap, but would just the normal muffler/jet size make it that much faster? My friend has an 86 aero which is the same engine and its a lot faster on the take off and tops out at about 37mph.
My spree is so low on power i can hold it wide open and hold the bike back from going without the front tire wanting to come off the ground. I havent checked the compression but when manually turning it over it didnt give easy by any means so Im guessing its fine. Im not sure if the new injector oil has made its way in yet either ive only riden it a little bit but i did get the smoking to go away :).
I quess the question is, is the iowa spree only suppose to go 22mph top speed? And would changing the muffler and jet to a normal spree muffler and jet make it go 35mph and have a stronger start?
After That i wanna do the air filter mod, I heard it was the K&N that goes to a chevy V-8 valve cover or something like that?? Anyone know the part number or excataly what it is so i can better explain it to the napa person?
Then i also wanna do the pulley mod but all i know about it is that its a pulley mod... i have no idea what to do, any help would be great!!!
Thanks a ton guys! I found a normal spree muffler for about $40 so if that will get my spree up to 35mph I'll be way happy, but what i really want is a bike that accelerates fast, 45mph is a good enough top speed.

find the chrome oil breather caps for V8 engines
buy the one
take a dremel tool or razror knife and make the hole insde the rubber big enough to fit over the mouth of the carb pertex the carb mouth slip the breather on there clamp a big hose clamp on it.. warm up the enigne run it.. adjust if needed.
yes the exhaust and jet will make a difference...
you should end up at abot 32 mph anything more is extra icing..
the aero has a different tranny.. it is always going to be faster off the line..
and if you do the pulley mod, your top speed will go up a couple of mph your your accel will get slower..because you changed the gear ratio at both take off and top end..

I just meant the K&N part number for the oil breather. Im not excatly sure what im looking for so I wanted to just search online to see it or just give the parts store the part number. K&N does make one and is the best one to get right? Thats what ive read...
When i search online for them I find chrome "push in" oil breathers. These dont look right. What i picture them being is like a normal K&N cone air filter only a lot smaller. So thats why i thought if anyone knew the K&N part number It would be a lot easier :).
Thanks alot for the help whiz.
What size jet you think id need if i took the packing out of the muffler and did the oil breather cap?

anyone heard of these or used them?

From what it says you dont have to use your normal battery just that thing... Here is what it says about what it does and doesnt work with:
"In general, if it has a permanent magnet flywheel, chances are the Bat-Pac will work.
Older bikes that have a point type magneto can also use the Bat-Pac. If it uses a
brush type generator/alternator to power the ignition then the Bat-Pac won't work."
It also says this:
"Eliminate the need for a battery for many Motorcycle ATV Scooter Snowmobile.
If your application has an electric starter, you will lose that function."
So my spree has an electric starter right? Does that mean theres no point to having this thing?
I have an 84 spree will this thing work for me?

I have an 84 spree that is the iowa spree. what is the difference? Does the normal and iowa spree have the washer in the exhuast or do neither one?
Also I've search the site up and down and did the google search and get lots of links but Cant seem to actually track down info on modding a spree... I just wanna do some free mods or pretty cheap ones but i wanna do as many as i can to get it as fast as i can.
Ive heard about de-restricting the exhuast, is that just the washer? Ive heard something about a variator but dont know what to do with it? Is it best to jerry rig an open cone typr K&N filter for the intake?
I dont mind spending $50 or so here and there so if theres any parts like reeds that will add to power let me know. Maybe wiseco makes pistons for it, or whats the most i can mill the head and still use pump gas and what kinds of gains will i get from it, etc.
Tell you what... If Brain and/or the others here that know a ton about modding an 84 spree will post everything they can I will host the mods on my site and you can just link to it evenever someone asks about modding the spree. You can even do an 86 aero since my friend has one and wants to mod it too. Help me help you :).
I have honestly put lots of effort into finding the mods all over the net and on here and have come up with nothing... when i do the search here i get the link and theres nothing on that page about the spree or any mods?? Maybe its just me.
either way Im more than happy to host the info you give to me on my site with pics also, or video/audio. Maybe you wanna start writing it up in notepad and email that to me? either way lets get an easier way for other spree/aero owners to see all the mods they can do with directions and pics. I could even take the pics of all the mods you guys show me and do a little write up for it! WEEEE what great fun.

the exhaust is restricted, and the Iowa has a smaller main jet in the carb..
search problems:
network54 uses dynamic paging ( the page numbers of the forum change )
the message numbers staythe same..
when using google ALWAYS click on 'cached' when the results come up..
google gives you a summary / partial of the post ,
the page &message # link and a cached link
Always click on cached and you will get the google copy of the post
if you click on the page link you get the new page with that number not the old posting,
Mods
you can mod the front pulley, and change the drive belt..
and you can buy a big bore kit designed for the aero and mod your engine, BUT you will have to but the aero performance exhaust and mod/bend the pipe to fit your modded spree..
YES there are after market over the counter mail order parts for your friends aero..
But Not for the spree..
the good news is the spree and the aero have the same bore diameter and same cylinder bolt pattern.. so if your willing to put in some time modding the 'mods'you can put aero performance parts on the spree.
So any aero part would work, not any plastics of course but like exhuast, cylinder, pistons, carbs, reeds, etc?
about the exhuast, would all the "modding" to the exhuast just have to be bending it to fit? I dont have a welder so cutting wouldnt work out. What exhuast would you get for an aero/spree? I hear alot about the biturbo i think its called, is that the best way to go you think?
as for modding the pulley do i get a new pulley or what do i do to the one thats there? And i dont actually mod the drive belt i need a replacement for a different size or what?
Thanks a ton!

that those parts will bolt onto your engine, along as you specify that you get the piston that has a 10mm wrist pin..
bigger cylinders tack more space, the spree plastics maynot fit back into place ?
the exhaust port on the aero cylinder is different than a spree cylinder , so you have to buy a performance exhaust designed to bolt to the aero exhaust port..
the spree exhaust and aero exhaust mounts are in different places, so the exhaust tube will have to be bent in or out up or down ( without pinching and kinking ) and likely some kind of hanger or bolt extension..
carb & reeds i ( THINK ) will interchange but you have to look at the shape of the intake port and the intake flange of the carb mount and clearnace ( plastics )
Example : all the express models have the same intake port in the engine case..but each carb bolts to a different intake tube/manifold so if you change the carb you have to change the intake
spree pulley :too much for meto repost: basiclly you have grind off a lip on the inside of the pulley, put a washer the same thickness behind the pulley ( for belt aligment ) and buy a new longer belt..
it will be easier to do your buddys aero.. than your spree..
are you a mechanical " I can do it " or are you a person that would rather just buy some parts and bolt them on..
the biturbo a cut and weld mod.. was never desinged for the spree.. or aero... VTcycles has bolt on exhausts for the aero and eliteanything for you spree is going to require somekind of moding.

I recently purchased this NC50, it runs pretty good, but I'm having trouble with blowing out the lights. I just put in a new battery because the old one wouldn't take charge, and it still blows out the lights. How do I test my rectifier and how do I test my generator? Right now there is 12-15 V AC going to the headlight and about 7-10 V DC going to the battery at high rpm. The rectifier shorts one direction and has about 2-4 kilo-ohms of resistance in the other. What else could be causing this problem?
Also, this thing didn't have rear turn signal lights, so I'm working on putting a new set on. There are 3 wires hanging out in back, orange, blue, & pink. What is the pink wire for? Any help would be appreciated, Thanks...
Posted on Oct 16, 2003, 11:37 AM from IP address 64.21.240.30
trce your 'pink' and see if it becomes the brown whichis the tail light..
make sure the green wire is frame grounded and make sure the negitive side of the battery is frame grounded..
the battery negitive wire should read/test to ground even with the battery disconnected..
if it doesn't you have some bad connections and that is causing the voltage on the lights to go high..
make sure that the tail light and turn signals & horn work from the battery ..they should work with the key on and the engine off.. only the headlight belongs on the AC circuit

What models are they? If they're the Ankur or Panther or pacer, they're okay. My ankur's electrical circuit is not the quality of Honda or Tomos, but I can live with that. Exactly what models and years are they? don-ohio (:^)
