Kinetic won't idle on the ground

by (no login)

my continuing saga with the Kinetic Tfr.... Now I have it running ok, starts ok and seems to be smooth. But it won't idle with the rear wheel on the ground, or when I apply the rear brakes. I've losened the drive belt to the point where it slips, slightly sanded down the clutch pads where they were grabbing way too early but it still won't idle with the rear wheel on the ground unless I open the throttle, which gets the clutch too hot. ANy Ideas??? So far cosmo hasn't been any help.

You can't

by themopedwhiz (no login)

in most cases you can't, there might be an exception out there, but i haven't run across it..

true mopeds have automatic transmissions

the clutches are spun by the engine..

they do not engage unless the engine is running,

so no matter how fast you push the ped , the motor can't be bump started..

you need a manual clutch and transmission to do that

Could it be something........

by don-ohio (no login)

......wrong with the ignition switch when you turn it to start, contacting a ground or NOT contacting at all?
Or maybe the solenoid wire to ignition side is not making contact? i dunno, but I saw no one had answered so I thought I'd take a stab at it?
Then too....if when you kick it, it turns over way faster than when cranked, it could be down low on compression really bad. Have you checked for spark while cranking it with the starter? don-ohio (:^)

you have 2 possibilites

by themopedwhiz (Login themopedwhiz)
Moped Gurus

1 easy

1 hard
( make sure the key is off during this test )

loosen the adjusting nut on the rear brake at the rear wheel
then try squeezing the left/rear brake lever to see if the spring start spins over..

the arm that releases the spring starter is located on top of the tranny close to the carb..

push it forward or tap it with a hammer to see if it moves.. if the spring is ok the starter will spin..

if the arm moves .. but the starter won't spin, and the windup won't work .. then the spring is broken..

PS: these are NOT kick starters.. you step down on them 4 or 5 times untill the spring is wound then you squeeze the brake to release them..

it is also possible that your mix will be too lean at full speed and this will lead to more cylinder heat and possible damage.

You can get drill sizes 60-80 at most any industrial supply, however I just sent out for a set along with the finger powered "pin vise" to twirl them with from a model ship supplier by e-mail here's the URL. http://naturecoast.com/hobby/tool1.htm
Their prices were really reasonable.

Micro-Mark is good.

by RobD (no login)

I do a lot of machine work and even reduce jet hole sizes but to do it right you need to test the flow before you start rejetting. I tried to work out a size system from the numbers on the jets but different companies use different systems and the numbers don't relate to for instance, the metric equiv. I originally thought that if a jet said 72 on it it was .72 mm which would equal .028" (.72 x 25.4) but it doesn't seem exactly right or work with all carbs.
BTW to reduce the size of a jet I drill the original oversize to.050 or 1/16" then solder a thin rod of brass the same size into the orifice. I then chuck it in a small lathe, center drill it and size it with a small drill. It's not as hard as it sounds. At over $9.00 each for jets from Yamaha it's worth it!

Oil Pump Adjustment NU 50

Why?

by RobD (no login)

Actually, I don't care if he has six legs, purple hair and picks his nose with a pitch fork.
This is a forum about sharing ideas and advice about mopeds. Everyone should use common sense in their evaluation of a procedure he or anyone else advises here or anywhere else on the internet for that matter.
Judging from the advice he has given here, I'd say he knows what he is talking about.
I'm an EE with a background in large frame computers, patent prototyping and embedded microcontrollers. I have several patents, a nice little machine shop and a full electronics bench but that's actually more than you need to know. My personal life is exactly that, personal. Where I go and sleep is not anyone's business and I imagine it goes the same for the whiz.

As far as what I’m doing here with all my degrees. Actually I baited you with that one. Even with my vast knowledge I still realize I can learn from and share knowledge with, someone else. So with all those degrees behind me it must say a lot about the Whiz’s ability then, shouldn’t it.

Modding my 87 elite 50 continued (a prob)

by (no login)

Hey,
I've been working with vtcycles and my local mechanic to get my scooter going a little faster. From vtcycles I got the 65cc metrakit, koso variator and weights, and a proma exhaust. My scooter really flys now, but I'm getting a weird noise when I decelerate. It sounds like it's coming from the transmission. It's a rattling noise that occurs when I'm decelerating, but it seems like only when I'm using the rear brake. It also stops when I come to a stop. This didn't happen before I put all the upgrades in.
My 'diagnosis' is just a wild guess, but I'm thining something in the clutch. Actually, I did something stupid the first time I replaced the clutch springs (the 3 and the big one)- I forgot to replace the circlips that hold the clutch pad arms on the spindle (descriptive term, i don't know the real name for it). So I took it apart and put them back on. I thought the sound was less pronounced, but I left my scooter at home for a month while my parents got the brakes replaced and a new tire. So when my dad brought it to me I notice the sound is pretty annoying. Is this noise caused by uneven wear in the clutch pads?
I'm going to the shop very soon (as soon as I find one here) to get my rear brake cable adjusted, and I'm going to talk to them about this, but some insight from you guys would help me out!
Thanks,
Nate

More info, please help, someone must know something:mopedwhiz?

by Nate (no login)

I also noticed that the rattling/chattering definitely only occurs with the rear brake. Also, it only occurs when the scooter is on and I'm moving.

My other guess is that somehow the clutch gets moving faster than the engine when I'm slowing down with the rear brake?? Is that even possible, I don't know. Oh, I just thought of this: when I was doing this work, my dumbass sister knocked my scooter over and it landed on the axle that the clutch goes on... This is scary... did it get damaged? It didn't look bent, and this noise only occurs when slowing.
Thanks,
Nate

check rear brakes

by maddog (no login)

Well if you hear it when the rear brake is applied, pull off the rear tire and the pads, a clutch will only chatter on acceleration due to a weak center spring or strong clutch springs, both are color coded.
