thhe gas cap on my Honda Hobbit has a measuring cup built in. there's 2 marks on it, one halfway up the cup and the other at the top of the cup. I'm assuming that they're for the different mixing ratios. Can anyone tell me what they represent. are they for a gallon or larger?

Hi All,
Here are some tricks I use to fix peds cheaply but well.
First let me say I've been doing this stuff for years and have a machine shop and complete electronic testing bench with excellent equipment although I will try to show you how to test and repair without all that technology. My web site is www.dsgnspec.com and I'll be posting some of my peds there hopefully in the next few weeks.
There are a couple of things that you should have around. One is a piece of 1/4 inch glass about 10 inches square. The other is a cheap test meter from Radio shack. (About $10.00)
In the machine world we have a granite stone that's dead flat but you can come very close with glass plate.
Here's a trick for fixing Honda Express carb bowls. I noticed my Honda bowls have only two screws and the top of the bowl warps and leaks out the sides. To check yours place the bowl on the glass and hold it up to a light. Now look from the side and see if light is visible between the glass and the bowl. If it's very little you can tape a piece of wet/dry 400 or 500 grit paper the the glass and slowly rotate the bowl around it until it is flat. The entire bowl must be on the glass. ( You will have to remove the center post from your bowl, mine came out fairly easy but if yours won't come out you'll have to use a piece of metal instead of the glass with a hole in it or drill a hole in your glass which isn't as hard as it sounds. Ask the glazer to do this for you when you get the glass) You will know when the bowl is good when it has the same shine along its complete top ridge. You can use this method to flatten your carb flanges too. If you can't fix your bowl this way then try this:
Tape a piece of wax paper to you glass sheet (make sure it doesn't have any rinkles and is dead flat to the glass). Take your bowl and rough up the top rim completely with 220 wt/dry paper. ( This is so the JB weld will hold to it) Now mix some JB weld (The long drying one) and coat the top rim of the bowl leaving some excess. Place the bowl face down on the wax paper and put a small weight, about 6 oz. on top of it. Let it cure. When done remove the excess with a Dremel tool and you have a fixed bowl.
You can use the same glass plate and wet/dry paper to to flatten your reed valve body.
Many times bowls overflow and flood because the float pin doesn't seal the bowl completely. Here's what usually happens. a carb that is empty has the float sitting on the bottom of the bowl with the float pin off the seat. This is good for the pin because it doesn't get impressions in it from the orifice but what happens is that the orifice builds small crud and dirt on it which prevents the pin from sealing the orifice. You won't be able to see this. Here's what to do: Get a round toothpick and cut off the tip about 3/16 (5mm) up. Now spread some toothpaste on the tip and place it in the hole where the pin goes. Rock it back and forth with your fingers a few times pressing moderately hard. What will happen is the toothpick will take the shape of the seat and clean it. You should see the end of the tootpick slightly dark. Remember you DON'T want the toothpick to fit in the seat where it can break off, let the toothpick wood compress and take the shape of the seat. Only a very small amount of toothpaste is needed. When your done wash the carb from the fuel line side with water and make sure it is completely clean. I find most float pin are well made and last forever. The problem is usually in the seat.
If you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer them. Good Luck, RobD

So I pull into a little minimart gas station on my 1981 Honda Express, and I go inside to pre-pay. The guy says “We don’t sell moped gas.” I chuckle, assuming he’s just kidding around. After fueling, I go back inside to get my change. He gives me the wrong change, then says (in front of several other customers) “Don’t come back here again.”
I haven’t had the scooter very long; is there some widespread gas-station bias against scooters, or was this an isolated incident? Anyone?

I've never had this happen but at the price of gas he may be seeing a lot more peds!
My response would have been, "Don't worry at the gas mileage I get I won't have to come back here again!"

I'm looking for a wiring diagram for a 1984 spree. I got one sent to me a week ago but it did not transfer well and can't be read. If someone could please send me one to jandlthummel@aol.com. Thanks a lot.

I called forwardair.com today for a quote, and the nearest they can get my honda 87 elite 50 to where I need it shipped is 55 miles. Also, that will cost me $350, not including someone to deliver it 55 miles to where it needs to be. So, I guess I don't have any other options to get it to myself. It's just simply not worth the cost. I will wait until I come home for christmas break to bring it up for second semester.

Doesn't run, needs a good tune up but I don't have time to do it. I'm in central Illinois. Thought I'd offer it to you guys/gals before the ebay pit. you can email for more info.

Thank you so much with all the help that you did for me with getting my moped going. It ended up being the electric choke and i got a new one and works wonderfully! I think the choke kept sticking open and feeding to much gas in. I really appreciate it!

I am looking for replacement cables for a 1982 Honda NU50. Need both the throttle and rear brake cables. I have tried a number of Honda dealers and these are now obsolete. Also tried a few bone yards in MI and have not been able to find. Are these still available anywhere? Would appreciate any help!
Thanks!

Now that I have my proma and metra kit on my 82 express, what kind of cold spark plug do I need, What # of main jet and, what kind of air fuel mixture do I need? Thanks a lot.

for starter go up 1 jet size , I think the stock on a 48 states NU50 is a#85 .. but double check with honda.. and go up one
switch to premix fuel 25:1 ratio that's 5 oz oil 1 gallon of gas
air/mix on the carb varies with each engine use the normal starting points for your carb, ( change the jet not the screw settings ) adjust from there for best running

If you get on the `buy/sell' forum and ask, they may have a line on one. Also, every once in a while you'll see one on e-bay. Did you want a step-thru type or top-tank? Single-speed or 2-speed? Also, you can call Ike's Bikes at 1-937-446-2115 and ask if he has one. he will be out of town this weekend though. Just keep checking e-bay or maybe Zippy on this forum has one. Where are you located? don-ohio (:^D

I have a 1977 Yamaha Chappy. The right turn signal works fine. When I turn on the left turn signal I am getting a fast clicking sound from the turn signal relay. I tried a replacement relay but it did not fix the problem. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix the problem?
Thanks,
Kevin

Hello Kevin
I have never had this trouble on a bike but I am sure it will be the same system as on a car
Your problem will more than likely be either a blown bulb ( however im sure you have checked that ) or the wiring from the flasher relay to the bulb or perhaps just as likely a dirty bulb holder, dont dismiss any connectors or holder that looks ok they may well have an almost invisible oxide layer that is preventing the current flowing
you will have to trace the wiring from the switch out to the affected bulb, ideally you would do this with a voltmeter but you could use a spare bulb, connect one side of the bulb to the bike frame ( earth )and the centre or other pin of the bulb to the wire you are checking if its ok the bulb will flash in sympathy with the indicator relay, make sure the bulb tester is working first by touching the wire on the main battery positive terminal where it should light up

I have an 86 Spree that has kicker starter problems. For the most part, it just doesn't work. It seems to wobble around in the opening, some times it will catch most times it is jammed and won't move.
Off hand. Is this a "common" Spree problem?
Is it easy or a nightmare to fix? Any idea what parts cost?
Thanks in advance.

I had a '89 elite with the same problem. What it is, is there is a gear behind the cover, if you take the kickstart cover off you will see the gear. More than likely it is probally missing a few teeth. This happens quite a bit, especially on older scooters. What you need to do is unbollt the kickstarter, then take the snap ring off and the whole gear will come out. Be careful of the spring!! You can go to your honda dealer and they can get a new gear or do what i did and went to a junk yard and pulled one off a junk moped. I can maybe pick one up for you if you cant find any by your house. Just let me know!

My '82 express has a fuel leak (fuel coming out the drain hose) when it's not running but the petcock is "on". I'm convinced that it's the float pin in the carb. I bought a new pin (for a rediculous sum) from the Honda dealer, but it still leaks. So i suspect the part that the float pin seats into. Any ideas on how to fix this? I've tried gently cleaning...

Hi Scott,
I've had this happen. Here's what to do:
Get a toothpick and cut off the sharp point so it doesn't get stuck in the jet. Get an exacto knife and redo the point so it is about the same angle as the jet (it doesn't have to be exact). Now dip it in toothpaste and rotate it back and forth in the hole. The end of the toothpick will take the form of the hole. When your done clean out the jet.( you can blow water in from the fuel line side to do this). To test your work refit the needle and float, turn the carb over so the needle is on the seat and blow into it through the fuel in line. you should get zero air passage. If you get even a tiny amount of air redo it.
