thats life. to have jimmy go to jail would have been too contrived an ending. and jimmy was dominant as you (and his wife) rightly said. who would have killed him? but pain like that is intergenerational. so perhaps as a consolation you could imagine michael, daveys son, killing jimmy as a teenager, sort of like how ray jr inavertently kills the daughter of the man who killed his father (which in itself is more trite than ironic, but whos counting?)
i keep watching this movies (coincidentally featuring laura linney, definitely a powerful actress in her own rite and somewhat underdeveloped in this movie, but here, i digress) where im reminded about how unfair life really is. im not sure that i like it. still on some level i think that death when it comes is a blessing to dave. his youth was stolen, along with the rest of his life since the boy who escaped from wolves never really grew up. death sets him free and in this regard im reminded now of another david, david gale. both davids are able to experience an innocence and understanding in death that neither was able to have in life. come to think of it there are several parallels that can be drawn between this movie and the life of david gale. now that would be an interesting discussion forum... |
