| Now there is the list everyone. Now no one can talk about who and shouldn't be on there because it doesn't matter anymore. Really Saturdays list of 300 is the only one that matters. |

If a player received one phone call from an OHL team earlier this week and a letter from another OHL team about 2 months ago, do you think it looks like this player will receive a phone call Saturday. |

Good question, do the phone calls really mean anything other than your on the
list.....How many kids does each team call??? |
|

The reason I'm asking is that I'm on the list but I havn't received any
calls......probably a bad thing right??? |

I wouldn't worry about getting phone calls. Most of the clubs will call their first five/six picks. The clubs won't call typically anyone after the fifth/six round because it's too unpredictable as to what players will be left.
Enjoy the fact that you are on list and enjoy the experience. Don't get caught up in all the crap.
This is a memory you should relish.
Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

I guess I'm very naive when it comes to this whole hockey draft thing, but all year long we've been telling our kids that it doesn't matter where you play, if you're good enough, they'll find you, and obviously that has worked for alot of the teams out there . . . York-Simcoe (5 or so on list), Copper Cliff (3 on list), Central Ontario (2), Barrie, Ajax-Pickering etc. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to have worked for one location. Now granted, the North Central Predators were not a top team, they had new coaching, and had there share of ups, & downs, however when all was said & done, they won the ETA Championship, eliminating York-Simcoe, Ajax-Pickering, Whitby, & Oshawa to take the title. They have a few players on their team that do deserve to be on the OHL draft list, along side of these other players from teams they competed against all year. Some of the boys from the team were invited to the Regional U17 Camp, & a couple made it on to the main camp, ahead of several of the boys that are on the list. They are ranked by other scouting sites, but have been totally overlooked here. Somewhere, something went wrong for this group, and for the ones who had set goals of being drafted, it's hard to explain how so many other teams (players) were considered & not theirs (or them)at all. . . insightful comments only please, as these boys are down enough without someone rubbing salt in their wounds. |

Don't get to down on your boys there is a reason why they draft for 3 years central scouting makes many mistakes and some people our never drafted end up doing fabulous things and it is true if you are good enough somebody will find you someday maybe not in the draft but there is always next year and the year after that. I say North Central play and they did have a few good players they will find there way just keep working hard and it will come central scouting isn't perfect. |

People give scouts too much credit.
I know of a few players that should be drafted. They are not even on the list & are never even mentioned. I do not think their parents care one way or another and the kids just keep developing.
Here is a name for everyone to look at.
Matt Martello 12/19/1987 6.01 200 Lbs 48GP 28G 39A 67Pts
Plays with Vaughan Vipers Jr. A & is 1987 born. He has never been drafted by the OHL & has never been on their draft list until this year (2006).
Maybe they figured he should be on their list since he is ranked 131st in N. America for the NHL draft & has committed to Lake Superior State University. |

How does that saying go?
"The squeaky wheel gets the grease."
I was thinking of the exact same person as you.
Basso is an exceptional player, great kid & great parents that don't say a word & he gets missed by all the so called expert scouts.
Meanwhile some far more inferior player with manipulative, kiss ass, loud mouth, self promoting parents find their kid a way on.
Truly is a shame. |

You speak of the squeaky wheel getting the grease - sometimes it gets the axe. I bit my tongue for years. I have a kid who's had to be better, just to be treated nearly (but never really) equal to his partner. I trusted that he would, in the end, be done right by his coaches, be rewarded for his continuous hard work and consistent, strong performance. As it became apparent that he was being overlooked - perhaps because his partner was being given all the visibility, I don't know for sure, but that's how it felt - I spoke up. The reaction seems to have been as bad, or worse, than if I had just continued to bite my tongue - again, I don't know. All I do know is that a great player, a kid with amazing heart and soul and skill will be watching from the sidelines on Saturday. I'll just try to keep him believing that good things will come if he continues to work as he always has - why not? On the positive side, I'm sure to have him at home a little longer. Best of luck to the rest of you. |

To all the players who did not get on the list, please DO NOT think any less of yourselves. You are at an age where growth and development is fast and furious. There are so many opportunities that could still come your way. Work hard and don't give up the dream, some of the best OHL and NHL players never made it to their first draft either. You have a lot of time left for good things to happen. A lot of these players who are on THE LIST may never play in an OHL game at all. Chins up boys! |

I know of one kid from Brantford, Kyle Jansen , had a terrific first year of AAA. Had 61 points, ( point per game ) , and was an excellent addition to the Brantford team. However his name does not appear on the draft list? A kid of this caliber not being selected is terrible. And I can think of many more kids in this same situation. There are kids on that draft list that wow, they maybe an embarresment to the OHL but whatever. The OHL is missing out on this kid.
Does anyone else know of anyothers in the same situation. |
|
Anonymous (no login) 64.231.175.57 | Re: Kids Being Left Out | May 5 2006, 4:13 PM |
Every team in Minor Midget AAA has a player that SHOULD have been on the Draft list. I have looked over the list and I see countless errors, and omissions. But, we are stuck with the final result. For all players/parents who fell like you have been screwed by the OHL, please remember this draft is only the first step towards a career in hockey. This sport provides many other oppourtunities, Keep things positive. Good things will come to those who work hard. It may take several years before this theory become a realization, however it is very true.... |
|
Anonymous (no login) 70.30.151.224 | Re: Kids Being Left Out | May 5 2006, 4:42 PM |
The problem is that there are too many kids and too little rounds. Many years ago the OHL used to have a two day draft if memory serves me correct. First day was that years draft, the second day was to draft Bantams only. Then the next year or so the OHL expanded the draft to 20 rounds. People complained about both years saying it was too long and it wasn't fair for a player to a 20th round pick. So the OHL reduces the number of rounds and reduces the number of players eligible and still people aren't satisfied. I'm not saying they are perfect but at least they are trying.
Now as for kids being left off the eligibilty list, it is obvious that the problem may not ly with the scouts but with the players that are not on the list. By no means am I knocking or criticizing the players since I agree that there are some obvious ommissions from the list. But having said that, if a player was missed by OHL Central Scouting (Kitamura and staff) how is that all 20 OHL teams and their scouts missed these players as well. Each team can add up to 5 players up unitl the cut off date. Surely if there was any interest in any one of the players not on the list, they would have had them added. All OHL teams (Team Head Scout and staff) meet prior to the cut off and review the OHL list as well as the players they have "keyed" on during the year. If there was a player that they were interested in, he would have been added.
Lastly, maybe the OHL needs to review how it decides its eligibilty list. The biggest problem over the past few years is the number of players on the list that have no intention of ever playing in the OHL. Unfortunately many of these players are from the US (not being prejudice) it's just a fact. Many American players have the option of playing on the National Development team, various junior local leagues, as well as the USJHL. While they play the game (O or not the O), many players here who would love the opportunity to play in the "O", can't even get on the list because the list has so many players that have no intention of ever coming North.
Maybe it's time that the "O" really became the Ontario Hockey League. Maybe we draft and play only players who play Midget hockey in the province. Just a thought.
And finally to all players who are on the list, congratulations. If you get drafted, great, if not, you still have a lot of hockey left, enjoy it. To the players who did not make the list, you to still have a lot of hockey left, enjoy it. |

Anonymous (no login) 64.229.225.41 | Re: Kids Being Left Out | May 5 2006, 4:46 PM |
There are many players in Jansen's situation. He is an excellent player, but lots of other excellent players aren't on the draft list. It is amazing how many players and parents see being drafted by the OHL as the true measure of a player's ability. It is important to remember that the OHL draft is held for the benefit of the OHL teams, not for the benefit of the players. Any player drafted tomorrow becomes the property of ONE TEAM and they either play there or not at all in the OHL (unless that team lets them play elsewhere). All the player can hope for is that the team which owns him treats him fairly. OHL is not minor hockey. A player is a piece of meat, who can be bought or sold, allowed to play or not. Most of the players who play OHL will never be heard from again. The scouts miss out on lots of good players and it is the OHL teams who are the losers, not the players missed. The vast majority of the players drafted will not play in the OHL this coming season, and next season Jansen will have just as good a chance to make an OHL team (as a free agent, if he isn't drafted in 2007). It is better to NOT be drafted than to be drafted in the later rounds.
The list this year seems particularly weighted in favour of the GTHL. Just look at the goalies. There are only 3 goalies from the Alliance (2 from Huron-Perth) and only 2 goalies from the SCTA (both from Burlington) on the list, while something like 12 or 13 GTHL goalies are on the list. A lot of good goalies are not on the list.
Another important factor seems to be size. There are lots of skilled players who don't (yet) have the size the OHL wants and that alone is why they aren't drafted or aren't drafted very highly. Good examples of this are Kozlik in Oakville, Williams in Halton and Lyons in London.
The NCAA route is usually a better option for most players if it is available (and even staying in OHL camp for 48+ hours eliminates that option). |

Congratulations to all the kids not on the list & to those that do not get drafted.
To those that do get drafted, don't be too upset, things may work out in the end. Work hard & keep the chin up.

Wow, a faint ray of hope thanks for that ... but doesn't it follow that a list of "eligible players", released by the OHL through its official website IS "the actual draft list"? It's not that I don't (want to) believe you, but just what you say runs counter to what others speak of as obvious: e.g. not on the list no chance (not true?) |
|

the list that appears on the ohl website is the eligibility list for the draft. if you are not on the list, you are not eligible for tomorows draft and there is no chance of a team selecting you. |

Every OHL team's head scout will be there but because of OHL rules will be camouflaged as plexi glass. They will make their assessments & if anyone is deserving will be added to the list at 11:59 P.M.
Cost is $100/hour & only a few spots remain. You can email me to reserve your spot email me at
