If you check the date of births of NHL players you will see a similar pattern.

These numbers match a trend in hockey. Check any AAA team from Novice all the way to the NHL. Most all of the kids are born in the first 4 to 6 months. This is nothing new.

Do not need to check it. It has been written about in hockey books and articles for years.

The 87 & 88 kids drafted are both Tier II Jr A players. Martello the 1987 will most likely be drafted into the NHL in a month and a half. (has never been on the OHL draft list until this year)

later birth kids are at a distinct disadvantage right from the start. very few get a chance to ketch-up, that is why so few were drafted this past weekend. its not that they are less calibre, its that there is so few on AAA teams. as far as higher levels of hockey go , the births are very evenly distributed, meaning the later kids have a higher % chance of advancement.maybe more upside potential involved. just a thought!

Be vigilant boys: only 2 months for real shagging

May 8 2006, 8:52 AM

There should be a notice sent out on all of our wedding days (perhaps with every honeymoon package). Serious shagging for purposes of conception should only be performed during the months of April and May to allow for January and February babies only.
*Careful though to work in the latter weeks of April so as not to run the risk of the most dreaded birth date of all: last week of December. If your wife goes into labour during that last week, you can likely get a court injunction to have it medically halted (the labour only of course) or perhaps there is some convenient but maternally (reasonably) comfortable corking procedure that could be implemented at that time. Dammit man, do NOT let that last week of December baby be born!

I love it. Great comment.

Please check Tavares' birthdate before you seriously plan to change when you conceive your next child.

The comment is an astute observation about opportunity and the disparity of opportunity available to boys in hockey with late birthdays. This cause and effect relationship I believe was studied at RMC specifically with respect to hockey. However, there are studies with wider scope than just sport opportunities and the statistics remain consistent. So, make your uninformed ignorant jokes. But at some point folks need to face the fact, success accrues more readily to people born soon after "cutoff" dates. It is what it is.

Interesting observation, but what can be done to rectify the problem. Maybe do like the NHL and go by age as of draft date.

Quebec and Europe go by the age at the seasons start not at year end. No matter what you do the same thing will occur. Now it is the kids born Sept to December that dominate

One should never put a Taurus on the same line as Scorpio, unless they're playing with a pair of Gemini's on defence, and Jupiter's fifth moon is in line with ... Uranus

The scouts are aware of birth dates. It's part of their job to project their development by age 18 and 19. That's when these younger kids will fully develop and in their prime for Junior hockey. By the time they are draftable via the Pro Entry Draft, most of the unknown is gone. All that's left now is to determine who is committed to further developing by age 22 or 23. The majority of players need minor pro development before they can step into the NHL at which point birth dates no longer matter. In conclusion; I could see a kid giving up between the ages of 15-16 if they are younger, smaller and not given the chance. Steve Thomas never was drafted by OHL or NHL teams.

would the players drafted this past weekend, born in the various months, be reflective of the birth-months on their various AAA teams? i.e jan. the highest % decreasing on down to dec?
