Hear that there were a fews camps for the drafted players this weekend, anyone know how some of our 1st rounders did? Just curious, cause I heard that some of them did not show too well at the U-17 camp last week.

Sarnia and Windsor mini-camps

May 21 2006, 8:58 PM

In Sarnia, Stamkos looked good, but Balbino raised some eyebrows, some people thought he was the best player on the ice.

In Windsor everybody is talking about Cundari, he was using the body quite a bit, they were comparing him to another Woodbridge boy, Marco Caprara but only on D. Marco is one tough SOB; I guess when you're 5'8" you have to be.

sarnia camp

best player was stamkos, best defenseman was a toss up between prout and sullivan, prout will stay with the team but sullivan was looking pretty good, di salvo was strong, balbino i thought was lazy at times but brought a physical game out there that others lacked.

How did nemisz look at the windsor camp?

Re: Draft Camps/Weekends

May 22 2006, 10:49 AM

From a Winsor observer:

"Second day of camp proved to be somewhat less enthusiastic, but that just gave everyone a chance to see what some of the other kids, who didn't stand out on Saturday, could do.

Luke Turcotte - He played a strong, defensive game with a good physical presence. I noticed him much more out there, playing a simple game, yet doing little wrong.

Tyler Courneya - Like Turcotte, he played a very solid game and was involved physically. He didn't seem to back down, but wasn't looking for it necessarily, either.

Greg Nemisz - After his rather lacklustre performance yesterday, he turned it up a notch today. His speed isn't what I was hoping for, but his puck intelligence was right up there. He weaved in and out of guys, using his size to his advantage (the kid has to be 6'3 190).

Guys like Cundari, Baratono, and Higgins were out hitting again, stirring up trouble on occasion. Cundari continues to impress me and I'd love to see what he can do in the O. Picture a Darryl Lloyd/Marco Caprara combination, but on defence.

Does anyone know anything about Richard Greenop? He's got great size (6'3 215?) and his stats last year show he's not afraid to use it. This weekend he flattened a few guys when he had the chance, but wasn't looking like a mad man.

In the scrimmage game, Thomas Battani scored the opening goal for Team White, while Corneya and Kevin Quincey added two more. They also had one from an unknown scorer, giving them four on the day. I didn't catch the Team Blue scorer.

No fights to talk about, though some rough play led to a few recipe discussions.

It's going to be fun watching these kids develop over the next few years. They're a bigger bunch who like to use their size, speed, and skill. Is it September yet? ""

Don't get too excited boys. You have been attending rookie camps made up of mostly 90's & 89's. The main camp will be like night & day when compared to these ones.

Let's not forget that these '90s just drafted are all sixteen years of age compared to the 18 and 19 year olds they will be competing against in the OHL camps. Only a few '90s will be good enough to make the team out of their first tryout camps. Some of them will have to wait for a year or two before they are big enough, strong enough, and mature enough to crack their lineup. Not many actually make their OHL team and secure prime ice time right out of the blocks. Patience and much more hard work are required. It is a long hard road ahead yet. The draft is just the beginning.

Must be Dunham. He has proven to be not much of a team player. the fact of the matter is he is spoiled and whines. we played with him two yeas ago and if he doesn't get his way he's very anti-social to the rest. he is out to shamelessly self promote himself and someone, either sooner or later needs to kick his a** and make him aware that there is no I in TEAM to make him a better player. when that happens we will have a player on our hands.

Dunham (strong on skates) , Mackinnon(skilled speed), Perlini(great hands ) were the top line for the black team. Livingston (power),Jones (fast & tenacious),Carrick (gritty) for the red team. Dunham,Jones,Mackinnon and Perlini good goal scorers. Soo has a great future!

So your advice to the 1992 and 1991 kids is to puck hog, not pass, take your shots regardless of opportunity. What ever it takes to get more goals than your mates. Focus on the individual goals. Forget the team. OK

The truth is...the ohl doesn't care if a gifted goal scorer is selfish.
They don't care if a big defensive defenseman can score goals.
What you can tell your kid is to enjoy the game.

First rounders get the academic package anyway, he simply manipulated teams. League needs to tighten up rules to let the teams pick who ever they want. If you don't want to go, play Tier II, it is getting ridiculous.

Yea it is so ridiculous that a kid may want to play for a club that would allow him to live at home. The nerve of that family.

What is ridiculous is that WE allow the OHL clubs to draft 15 rounds of 16 year olds.

Well, if there is a draft it should be a true draft and not a sham like it is now. Branch is a joke and manipulates the rules as he deems fit. If you don't want to go away at 15, stay home and play tier II and shine, anything wrong with that?

Lots of 15 didn't want to move and they didn't send out sham letters like CH, that is my point.

If you knew the Hodgsons as I do you would know that they are the nicest family in hockey. They never put down other pleyers and Cody is all abou the team. Is it so wrong for a kid to not want to leave his home at the age of 15? Brampton also offered Cody a great educational package which was a big selling point. Stop bashing a kid who wants a good education, plays hard, and isnt ready to leave home yet.

It is the perfect situation for them and I suspect there may be others wondering whether they should do the same thing, if their kids are drafted high on teams close to home. 15/16 is incredibly early to leave home. What price glory? Gone from the nest so young; life moves so quick, eh?

What IS "right" is to leave parenting up to the parents. You parent your kids, because, you know them best. Let others parent their kids, because they know them best. You make your parenting decision and live with it, others will make theirs and they'll live with it. Hockey, in its conceite, has decided hockey knows what is best for all kids and they make very questionable broad stroke rules to exert control. Hockey should step away from parenting and pay more attention to ensuring those that show up are properly evaluated based on what is brought to the ice. Natural selection will take care of the rest.

What Time is Right?

June 12 2006, 12:20 PM

What time is right for kids to leave home?

The sooner we accept that there is not RIGHT answer for all kids the quicker this discussion will end.

For some, they mature quickly and are READY at younger ages.

The example of gymnasitic kids leaving home early is just wrong if they have health family lives available at home. Some move out for other reasons.

In general, our kids should be an enjoyment for as long as possible. Spend as much time with them as you can because life is short and they grow up quickly. Some day you may reflect and wish you had another year or two.

THERE IS NO RUSH. If they can make it ... they will ... rushing them will only shorten the time parents have to influence their life time experiences.

Do not let some of the commercial reasons (junior hockey), ego, or other neanderthal attitudes expressed by some on this site to infulence the experiences we share with our kids.

Well I am glad for Young Mr. Hodgson.

As the person above stated, some kids are ready to leave at different times. I was very independent at 16 & would have loved going to some other city/town to play. My own son has no interest to leave home. He has already told me he'll only play 2nd level Junior from home. The funny thing is my son is much more grounded & mature than I was at 16. If I had to choose to send my son or myself at 16 away, I would have much more confidence in sending my son.
