In keeping with the start of the Midget season, let me tell you this.
Out of the 20 OHL teams, the average OHL training camp was 40 players in number.
We are a couple of week sinto the camps, and here is some interesting info for those kids playing Major Midget who were not drafted...
There were 13 players who were invited as total Free Agents to OHL camps, who made the OHL teams' active rosters.
They are:
1989 D Ryan Gottschalk in Barrie (from MID - OMHA)
1988 RW Jason Dale in Brampton
1988 C Brandon Buck in Guelph (from Jr. B)
1989 G Thomas McCollum in Guelph (from MID/US(played a few games in Jr. B))
1989 D Mike Liambas in Erie (from MID - GTHL)
1987 G Jeff Dawson in Erie (from Jr. A)
1988 F Kyle Bochek in Kingston (from Jr. A)
1988 G Stephane Cesar in London (from Jr. A)
1989 C Thomas Stajan in Owen Sound (from MID - GTHL)
1989 F Brendan Taylor in Peterborough (from Jr. A)
1989 F Matt Martin in Sarnia (from Jr. C)
1988 F Byron Elliott in St. Mike's (from Jr. B)
1989 D Matt Paltridge in Windsor (from MID - MHAO)
13 players who were not drafted made an OHL roster.
This does not include high profile colege guys who joined the league such as David Meckler in London and John Murray in Kitchener.
Nor does it include second chance guys like Tom Jefferson in Barrie, Troy Murray in St. Mike's and Adam MacArthur in Windsor via Barrie.
These kids did not give up, kept working hard towards their goals and have been rewarded. Hopefully they stay on track and achieve even more success.
There are always a lot of drafted players who take things for granted because they think getting drafted is a free pass to making the team the next year. Those kids are usually disappointed. Keep on playing hard; opportunity is there if you are looking for it. |
