Not at all related to vkei but great bands nonetheless.
1. The Gathering - Dutch band, started out as brooding and kinda annoying doom metal, then got a female singer and WOW! Their latest album was their biggest departure from metal and is actually more like triphop/dark rock than anything. It's called "Souvenirs", and its worth a listen. They aren't like anything else in the whole world.
2. Other triphop bands - Portishead, Massive Attack, Tricky, Hooverphonic, and others. This is a great genre for dark, cool music.
3. Muse - British rock band, a lot of people I know like them, and I think for a mainstream band they are quite good. Put on an AMAZING live show.
4. Lacuna Coil - I've liked them since about 2000, but they are just starting to gain popularity in the States with their latest album "Comalies". Hard rock/metal with dual female and male vocals, very good indeed.
5. Within Temptation - "Gothic metal" band that has recently been topping charts in Holland and Germany but nowhere else... very poppish, female-fronted and quite visual too!
