you don't need to register for copyright. Copyright is automatic as you create a medium. (trademarks are different)
However, to insure your right you register it to prove that you were, really, the first to write it.
And on the issue of ownership of name, that's also not true for the most part in Japan: managers, not bands, seem to be the ones who own name rights, regardless of who came up with it.
