I've only ever requested photos for use with academic work, and for the most part it hasn't been indies bands. If you can get a hold of someone, indies bands are MUCH easier to get clearance from than say, Luna Sea. T_T Or for older anime. Indies bands are usually easier to contact in general (when they're still around) and something like a photo in a publication in the US isn't seen as anything but promotion. :P

Music would be a different fish, as the possibility for abuse is much greater.
